Selectors on Wednesday named young leg-spinner Shadab Khan in a 16-man squad for their three-match Test series in the West Indies, rewarding him for his strong Twenty20 performance.

Shadab, 18, who rose to fame in the second edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in February-March, took 10 wickets in Pakistan's 3-1 T20 series victory against the West Indies last week.

Chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq said Shadab's inclusion highlights the policy of introducing fresh blood.

“The Test team has been selected keeping in mind the conditions in the West Indies and the recent performances of players during the domestic and international season,” Inzamam told AFP.

Misbah-ul-Haq will lead Pakistan in the Tests, which follow the three-match one-day series starting in Guyana on Friday.

Inzamam said Shadab had performed better than predicted.

“Everyone felt that Shadab has performed beyond expectations so we thought he should also be used for the five-day format,” he said.

Uncapped medium paceman Mohammad Abbas, 27, won selection thanks to his performance in domestic matches, having taken 61 and 71 wickets in the last two home seasons respectively.

Middle-order batsman Usman Salahuddin, 26, was selected for the first time in a Test team after failing in the two one-day internationals on the tour of West Indies in 2011.

But wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, who scored 1,035 in the country's premier first-class tournament and Asif Zakir - 853 runs in the same tournament - were overlooked.

Inzamam defended Kamran's exclusion.

“We gave Kamran chances in the recent Twenty20 (in West Indies) and he is in the one-day squad but in the presence of the main wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed it was tough to get him in the Test side,” he said.

Openers Ahmed Shehzad and Shan Masood staged comebacks in the Test side but there was no place for Mohammad Hafeez, who was also overlooked for Pakistan's last two Test series in New Zealand and Australia.

The first Test starts in Jamaica on April 21, the second in Barbados on April 30 and the third in Dominica on May 10.

Squad

Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Ahmed Shehzad,Azhar Ali, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq, Usman Salahuddin, Sarfraz Ahmed, Yasir Shah, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asghar, Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Abbas.

Why Why Wahab is still there?

Osama Apr 05, 2017 08:19pm

@Babu bhai from saudabad He took the most wickets for Pakistan in the Australian test series and he was instrumental in the drawing the series against England. He lacks in seam and swing bowling but he is the best reverse swing bowler in the world right now and he gives it 110% in every match.

This time, Inzi has done a very good job in selecting the team for tests against WI. I wish the team all the best.

israr Apr 05, 2017 08:42pm

Nippy Hasan makes it along side Mohammad Abass thats really great to know, the only way usman will play in this series is if one of the no 3 to no 6 fails in first two tests like say babar or asad fails in first 4 inngs only then usman will play. I really am looking fw to see m abass making his debut i heard and seem him move the ball both ways without any change in action ... reminds me of m asif i hope abass plays and impresses us all, shadab will only play if yasir fails miserably in first two tests. Misbah is known to like older men haha like himself so lets hope we win with aamir hitting form back in odis and wahab all fired up for odi and tests. Also for hasan ali i think he might get a test in this series but is he strong enough to bowl and stay in field for two-three days .. i mean he is a v good batsman but not sure if he has the stamina he does not look v strong

anees zed Apr 05, 2017 08:45pm

You can now watch the Test matches since Hafeez is not there.

J. Gamble Apr 05, 2017 08:47pm

@Babu bhai from saudabad -Wahab is very good in breaking any partnership. AND HE VERY EXPERIENCED BOWLWE.

Shahid Apr 05, 2017 09:00pm

Sohail Khan has probably been the most successful bowler in the last 3 series. And he scored vital scores as batsman too. I just wonder, what has our coach against him.

Shahid Apr 05, 2017 09:06pm

It can only happen in Pakistan that young Sami Aslam who played some very good innings in England and UAE has been dropped only because he did not perform in Australia. But even when he did not score big in Australia, he did stay at the wicket for long times, and then there were also many others who did not perform at all on this tour, and that includes Misbah himself. We should persist with our talented youngsters and let them flourish on easy series in WI after very difficult 3 away from the home series in England, New Zealand and Australia.

Zeeshan Siddiqui Apr 05, 2017 09:25pm

Hafeez and Kamran Akmal's exclusion is the right decision. Misbah and Younis should retire on their own after this series. Sohail should have been in and Wahab should have been out.

Roy Apr 05, 2017 10:38pm

Actor Shehzad is back .. Such a miserable bunch of selectors.

Shahzad Apr 05, 2017 10:49pm

@Babu bhai from saudabad: Don't say anything. Wahab Riaz has such powerful Parchi that he could even become Minister of Sports (and I am not joking).

On the other hand, you are right. There are many (young and old) fast bowlers in Pakistan who can bowl better than Wahab. Though at international level, there are worse fast bowlers than Wahab who are playing test cricket for their country (because their country lack better fast bowlers than them).

Imran Apr 05, 2017 11:17pm

How would you justify selection of Shan Masood over Sami Aslam? Big question mark on selectors and their criteria. Let apart his international failures.. he has no credentials in domestic even to consider him selected team. He speak good English though. Rest of the selection is very good.

Marata Apr 05, 2017 11:43pm

Inzi has selected very good squad for test but he should replace Rahat Ali with Wahab Riaz, Wahab Riaz is a straight forward bowler no seam and swing, test cricket does,nt suit such bolwer, Rahat is very good specially in a test cricket very good control on his out swingers. Anyhow best wishes with Skipper Misbah and his company.

Zak Apr 05, 2017 11:57pm

After this series pakistan will raise to no 1 spot. Beating pakistan will be impossible for any team in the world.

MEA Apr 06, 2017 12:11am

@Shahid exactly. It's unwise to keeping Sami Aslam out of the test squad. To me, he seems to be more innocent, consistent, disciplined and proper batting prospect than Ahmed Shahzad. Moreover, I don't find any reason why Sohail Khan get dropped?

Zul Apr 06, 2017 01:32am

why two legs spinner. why not 0ne off spinner. its not fair to yasir shah if he is not in playing and 11 they include shadab instead

Mnkhan Apr 06, 2017 03:46am

Pathetic selection. Muhammad asghar may be a good limited over player but no test credentials. Ahmed shahzad and Usman salahuddin???? Khurram manzoor, fawad alam were better choices and its rudiculous to drop sami aslam on failing one series; all experts agreed that he is the future.

Finally musbah got his wish and got suhail khan excluded, a big hearted player maligned by own team management when fiers like riaz and amir were worst

Shakil, KS usa Apr 06, 2017 05:46am

Wishing all the best and happy to see new talented given a chance to prove. God Bless Pakistan.

SarAH Apr 06, 2017 06:16am

Shadab Khan and Yasir Shah great pair to test West Indies plus Shadab Khan is excellent bat too.

Waseem Sarwar Apr 06, 2017 07:32am

Sohail Khan couldn't run in for his second and third spells in tests. He just doesn't have that kind of fitness. I would play him in ODIs or T20 because he can still provide a good first spell with seam or swing but that's all. Sami Aslam could have and should have been selected ahead of Shan Masood. Wahab Riaz is the kind of bowler who attracts people to watch test cricket. There is not better site that watching a real quick left armer bowling at 150 KPH and hitting people left and right to with reverse swinging Yorkers and bouncers. All the best lads. Win it for us.

omer Apr 06, 2017 07:47am

No Fawad alam again.... He should be selected in test team..

A.Rehman Apr 06, 2017 08:55am

Why Wahab is selected in all form when his performance is zero. First of all he should improve his length and direction instead of pitching short pitch delivery.

Deedar Karim Apr 06, 2017 09:12am

why is Junaid missing from the tests he should have been included.

D.K. PAMNANI Apr 06, 2017 09:18am

This time, good team selection by Inzi

Luke Furtado Apr 06, 2017 10:12am

Good chances for Pakistan to win since all the main West-Indian players are at the IPL.........

Dr. Salaria, Aamir Ahmad Apr 07, 2017 03:04pm

Best of luck to the green-shirts in the upcoming three match away test series against the West Indies.
