Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level security meeting to review the progress of Operation Raddul Fasaad at Prime Minister House on Monday.

During the meeting, Sharif expressed satisfaction on the progress made by the army and other law enforcement agencies and gave directions for the pace of the operation to be expedited further.

Laws governing anti-terrorism efforts were also reviewed in the meeting and ways to make these laws more effective were discussed.

It was decided that the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) would be expedited and made more effective by both the federal and provincial governments.

Recent initiatives on the management of the Pak-Afghan border were also reviewed in detail.

Participants of the meeting included Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, National Security Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Nasir Khan Janjua and DG ISI Lt Gen Naveed, as well as other senior civil and military officials.

The Pakistan Army launched Operation Raddul Fasaad in February following a wave of terrorism that hit the four provinces, leaving over 100 dead and hundreds of others wounded.

The elimination of residual terrorist threats, the consolidation of gains made during previous counterterrorism operations and tightening security on the borders have been described as the main objectives of the new operation, which would be joined by the Pakistan Air Force and Navy, and paramilitary organisations, civilian law enforcement agencies and intelligence outfits.

KP Apex Committee reviews security situation

A Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Apex Committee meeting held in Peshawar today with Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa as a special participant reviewed the security situation in the province and progress on military operation Raddul Fasaad.

Participants of the meeting discussed measures to facilitate a process for 'mainstreaming' the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), Inter-Services Public Relations said in a press release.

The forum also discussed "issues emanating from the presence of Afghan refugees and matters related to improved border management", the ISPR said.

Pariticpants acknowledged efforts for the rehabilitation of Temporarily Displaced Persons (TDPs), with 89 per cent of TDPs returned and 93pc of Fata denotified, the ISPR claimed.

The forum also appreciated the efforts of the Pakistan Army, intelligence and law enforcement agencies and pledged to continue joint efforts to energise the National Action Plan and eradicate root causes of terrorism and militancy, the ISPR said.

Top civil-military officials, including KP Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, KP Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, and the Peshawar Corps Commander Lt-Gen Nazir Ahmed Butt participated in the meeting.
