KARACHI, July 25: All the matriculates seeking admission to the first year college classes will be comfortably accommodated under the centralized admission policy.

This was stated by the Executive District Office, Higher Education, Prof Rais Alvi, while addressing a press conference at his office here on Friday.

Referring to the last year admissions, the EDO said that placement list of 68,000 students was issued, however, 53,000 students took admission to the first year classes.

“Therefore, even if there is a 10 per cent increase in the number of candidates, they will be comfortably accommodated,” he added.

He said this year a total of 72,375 seats for the first year classes are being offered in 108 colleges and 30 higher secondary schools.

To ensure a smooth admission process, as many as 11 new colleges have been commissioned this year, the EDO added.

The new institutions are Govt Boys College, Landhi No-4; Govt Allama Iqbal College for Boys, Star Gate; Govt Boys College, Mangopir; Govt Boys College, Konkar Village, Gadap; Govt Boys College, Surjani Town; Govt Girls Science and Commerce College, Block-K of North Nazimabad; Govt Girls College, North Karachi; Govt Girls College, Korangi; Govt Girls Arts and Commerce College, Malir; Govt Girls Science College, Shah Faisal Colony; and Govt Girls College, Gulshan-i-Iqbal.

He informed that as man as 291 vacancies for teachers and 370 non-teaching staff had been generated in these 11 newly established colleges.

Prof Alvi said that a summary for the new appointments had already been moved by the education department and were awaiting approval by the Sindh government.

Announcing the admission schedule, he said that admission process would commence from July 28 with the distribution of admission forms. He further said that the filled forms could be submitted by Aug 7.

Admissions forms would be available at the 35 branches of Habib Bank Ltd, he said. As many as 10 information and guidance centres had been set up in boys and girls colleges to help students seeking admissions.

The EDO expressed hope that the entire admission process would be completed by Sept 10. He said that all the placement lists would be prepared by the Board of Secondary Education with an estimated cost of Rs495,000 expected to be incurred.

According to the faculty wise break-up of seats, he said that 36,840 seats would be available in Science; around 17,190 in Commerce; 17,745 in Humanities; and 600 in Home Economics.

Like previous year, the centralized admission policy for the year 2003 did not envisage any kind of admission quotas, he added.
