Customs in commanding position

Published December 31, 2003

KARACHI, Dec 30: Pakistan Customs were sitting pretty after reducing DHA to 206 for nine in their first innings on the second day of the Patron’s Trophy Pool ‘A’ match at Quaid-i-Azam Cricket Park on Tuesday.

The unlikely hero for Customs was their coach Mohtashim Rasheed, the veteran slow left-armer who was only playing in this match because of injuries to key bowlers. Bowling to a teasing line and length, Mohtashim picked up four for 34 in 23 excellent overs.

Among his victims were opener Asif Zakir and Wajid Ali who each made 68. Leg-spinner Shahid Mahmood also bowled well to claim two for 31.

Asif’s knock was embellished with 10 boundaries while Wajid struck six fours and one six. The pair added 91 for the third wicket in 83 minutes.

Earlier, Customs were all out for 370 after resuming at 340 for eight with Shahid Mahmood hitting some lusty blows in making 35 off 43 balls.
