5 Twitter-breaking moments from the Oscars that we just can't forget

The Best Picture mix-up wasn't the only Oscar moment that got people talking - there's one for every year since 2013!
Updated 27 Feb, 2017

The Academy Awards are known for breaking the internet... for the wrong reasons. Case in point: this year's Best Picture mix-up.

But this isn't a first for the prestigious award show. The Oscars mucks up each year with unexpected occurrences making history.

Don't believe us? We've got moments from the Oscars since 2013 which prove that the Academy is now a regular.

Oscars 2017: Best Picture mix-up

It was horrendous... nah, more amusing than horrendous, honestly, but in a first for the Academy, the Best Picture Award was erroneously handed to La La Land, when the winner was in fact Moonlight.

The Bonnie and Clyde duo Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway served as Oscar presenters for the big announcement and were accidentally handed the Best Actress in a Leading Role envelope and thus announced La La Land as the winner.

So. Much. Mayhem.
So. Much. Mayhem.

Since we're sure you know the story already, here's a short summary: The La La Land team was in an awkward place but handled the situation gracefully, as did Jimmy Kimmel (the host for the night) and the two presenters.

The award was then rightfully handed to Moonlight. Talk about awkwaaard.

Oscars 2016: Leo finally wins an Oscar

It happened. Finally. In 2016, Leonard DiCaprio was awarded an Oscar for The Revenant.

Leo won the award and there was zero chill.

People were waiting for this moment longer than desis wait for their US visas. But when it happened, everybody rejoiced. Granted he deserved an award for his other films more than this one, but after five nominations and no wins, fans were restless.

Leo's award signified a long awaited moment in history and Twitter saw zero chill as fans and people took every chance and opportunity to post memes about it.

Oscars 2015: John Travolta's sneaky kiss

Who wouldn't want to plant a kiss on the lovely Scarlet Johansson? But it's a bit excessive when it's unannounced on the red carpet in the middle of her solo photographs...

But Travolta does it anyway, in a rather, creepy way.

It was soon followed by a flurry of memes on social media and the actor was given the title Creep of the Oscars. However, The Avengers star felt there was "nothing strange, creepy or inappropriate about John Travolta" and called it "very sweet and totally welcome."

Sneaky, sneaky Travolta.

Oscars 2014: Ellen's famous selfie

It's time to admit that she's the real queen of Hollywood.

Ellen DeGeneres was the host of the night for the 2014 Oscars and not only did she feed the hungry guests some mouthwatering pizza, but she is also responsible for crashing Twitter with her famous Oscar selfie.

"We got an email from Twitter and we crashed and broke Twitter. We have made history," she had said after she shared her star-studded picture.

The selfie was retweeted, more than 2 million times in some two hours during the broadcast of the 86th annual Academy Awards.

The selfie included Hollywood's A-listers all hoping to cram in the picture and be a part of the selfie.

Oscars 2013: Jennifer Lawrence trips on stage

Jennifer Lawrence does it time and again people, but her first time was a memorable moment because she was making her way up the stage to collect the award for Best Actress for her film Silver Linings Playbook.

On the way up, the actor tripped on the stairs in her voluminous Dior Haute Couture ball gown and left people gasping. But she didn't let the fall get to her, after receiving a standing ovation from the crowd she said during her acceptance speech: "You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell. That's really embarrassing."

JLaw even had Demi Lovato cheering her on Twitter, "GO JENNIFER LAWRENCE!!!!!!! Only the COOLEST people fall on stage!!"

We're still waiting for another fall. Third time's a charm.

To sum it up, it's the Oscars, people. They're just living up to each year. If they keep this up, we wonder what's going to happen next year.
