Brave New World

Published January 22, 2017

Regular readers of Dawn may have, hopefully, noticed a gradual change in the content of Images on Sunday over the last few months. The reason: we felt that the Sunday magazine needed to reflect the times it finds itself in as well as a changing readership.

In this day and age, when the face of journalism is constantly changing, when a plethora of sources for news and analysis are available via the internet, and when a more diverse audience’s expectations should be considered, it was time for a revamp of the magazine as well. So, along with tweaking the content as we went along, we were working to completely reconceptualise and redesign the magazine. Not to follow the trends that everyone else follows, but to blaze a new trail.

The first big change you will see is that Images on Sunday is now going to be two different magazines. This one that you are holding in your hands — Eos — will focus on providing perspectives on society, culture and ideas. It will feature cutting-edge opinions and features on politics, social trends, history, popular culture, art, literature, travel, lifestyles, and sports. Books&Authors, which used to exist as a separate publication previously, will now form a distinct part of Eos.

The sister publication — Icon — will provide insights into the world of entertainment, celebrity and style. This is where you will find coverage and insight into film, television, music, dance, theatre, fashion and news about the showbiz world in general.

Both Eos and Icon will feature some of the writers you have grown to love as well as introduce exciting new writers.

What do readers actually want from a Sunday read? We believe there are three primary reasons that readers read anything with interest in a magazine: in-depth journalism that goes beyond the headlines to look at an issue providing new information and insights; fresh and provocative perspectives on the phenomena that surround us and which people also think about on an everyday basis; and writing that is simply a joy to read for the sheer use of language.

We are also acutely aware that its readers look upon Dawn to provide intelligent and meaningful reading content, not simply fluff that is only pretty to look at.

Visually the redesign is also meant to give a more contemporary look to the magazines as well as make them more reader-friendly. It is, however, still a work in progress, and you will continue to see minor tweaks here and there as we fine-tune things both in terms of design and content. We would love to hear your feedback and you can contact us directly here or via social media: the details of both are provided below.

We hope you enjoy the new avatars of Dawn’s weekly Sunday magazines. Good reading!
