KARACHI, Dec 15: An anti-terrorism court, on Monday, sentenced two accused to capital punishment in a kidnapping for ransom case.

Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3 also ordered the confiscation of the accused’ properties worth Rs100,000 each.

Accused Khalid Abbas and Mohammed Ali were charged for kidnapping a 19-year-old boy on Sept 26 for ransom in the limits of Sir Syed Town police station. They were arrested red-handed while receiving a partial payment from the victim’s paternal uncle.

The accused had kidnapped Adnan along with his car and demanded Rs1 million for his release.

The kidnappers used their victim’s cellular phone for negotiation with his family. The relatives of Adnan told the kidnappers that they only had Rs30,000. The kidnappers asked them to bring Rs30,000 at a desolate place near Nagin Chowrangi.

The family reported the matter to the police and took the money to the kidnappers accordingly. As the accused were about to receive the money, the plain-clothed policemen tried to arrest them. However, only one of them, Khalid Abbas, could be arrested and the other accused, Mohammed Ali, fled.

Four other accused, who were holding the victim hostage in his car near the place of payment, also fled leaving behind the victim. They were Nadeem alias Nadeem Katta, Kaleem, Zeeshan and Nafees.

Later, the police arrested Mohammed Ali on a tip given by Khalid Abbas.

Special public prosecutor Naimat Ali Randhawa examined all six prosecution witnesses in the case. The witnesses also included the victim, who identified both the accused before the trial court.
