Civil Defence in jeopardy

Published January 1, 2002

BAHAWALPUR, Dec 31: The local Civil Defence Organization is no more in a position to avert emergency in case of aggression by India.

It is learnt that the fire-brigade engines in the organization are not in a working condition and the members of its staff do not have even gas masks. Water filling system is also getting worse due to insufficient equipment. Of the 12 civil defence warden posts, nine are without any building. There are around 340 volunteers without any honorarium. Of them, 174 of them are in warden services, 27 in rescue parties, 105 for fire-fighting and 34 for first-aid.

A number of government employees and other members had been trained last year. At least 433 government officials, 2,119 students (male and female), 260 industrial workers and 218 petrol pumps’ employees were among them.

Social circles have urged the government to release funds for improving state of affairs in the organization.
