UNITED NATIONS: The Soviet Union yesterday [Sept 23] tabled a resolution before the U.N. General Assembly calling for the elimination of foreign military bases in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Noting that foreign bases in those Continents “are being used for direct military intervention in the domestic affairs of peoples, suppression of their struggle for independence and freedom, as well as dangerous activities threatening universal peace”, the Soviet resolution urged that “States possessing military bases in the territories of independent States or dependent territories should eliminate them at once and not establish them in future”.
The Soviet draft further asked the UN Secretary-General to supervise the implementation of this resolution and report to the General Assembly next year.
Introducing the resolution, the Soviet Foreign Minister, Mr. Andrei Gromyko, bitterly criticised the United States for establishing “hundreds of military bases and stationing permanently in the territories of other States about a million American soldiers and officers, nuclear and rocket facilities, airplanes and other types of armaments”.
