KABUL: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi jointly inaugurated the newly-restored Stor Palace in Kabul with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani via video link on Monday, Tolo News reported.
"In our hearts and minds, Indians and Afghans have always been close friends," the Indian premier said, adding that India's 1.25 billion people will "always be on Afghanistan's side in terms of working towards peace and stability".
The Indian PM said that joint initiatives between the two countries symbolised "the foundations of a modern Afghanistan".
"India will always work with you (Afghanistan) for a bright future," he said.
President Ghani thanked India for helping restore the historical building of Stor Palace. "Let me express my most sincere thanks to the government and people of India for standing beside us in days of happiness and sorrow."
Ghani said bilateral relations between India and Afghanistan are 'developing'.
Earlier this year, India and Afghanistan inaugurated the $300 million Friendship Dam in Herat. India also gifted Kabul a symbolic gift of democracy, its new parliament building in December last year.
India has poured more than $1 billion into Afghanistan reconstruction projects and humanitarian aid, making it one of the largest donors to the war-torn country.

India has never been and can never be a friend of Afghanistan. For India the centre of interest in the so called India-Afghanistan friendship is Pakistan. India is openly using the soil of Afghanistan to launch terrrosit activities and destablise Pakistan. To counter that, Pakistan will use its influence inside Afghanistan and so Afghanistan will remain a permanent theatre of proxy wars.

Do you have any source to confirm your claim of 'billions of dollars given to Pakistan' or do you guys just happen to yap about this topic .. If anything UNHCR, USAID etc used to provide relief goods through their own network of NGOs directly to the people living in Camps such as Jalozai. Now could have you ever wondered how much it has burdened our economy for decades by providing free education, healthcare etc to millions of refugees? I know a few high ranking officials in Afghan govt who did their free education in Pakistan and made their career because of it and are now bad mouthing us, they had no problem with our tribal people taking arms along side them and going to their country to help against USSR. We must seal that border for the sake of our future generations living on both sides.

Pakistan traditionally supports Taliban due to their Pukhtoon Roots while Iran Supported Northern Alliance on secretarial grounds. Northern Alliance have never good terms with Pakistan and they are in Power in Afghanistan now. @Kumar No sir China is neighbor of Pakistan both the countries have recognized and peaceful border. china always remained instrumental towards economic activities in Pakistan even both the countries helped each other in their nuclear power program. Silk root is centuries old thing. China has problem with its regions bordering Pakistan due to economic issues and those regions are far to approach via sea through China and to develop those regions in China it needs easy route in from of CPEC. So it is two way also to contain East Turkastan Movement China and Pakistan have shared goal and so on. I think it had nothing to do with India when Pakistan defines its relations with China

@kashmiripandit Money which comes from USA comes under two heads mainly USAID and Coalition Support Fund. USAID project are same for Pakistan as for other parts of world and coalition support fund is not the support money but a mechanism for reimbursement of amount Pakistan has spent on WAR AGAINST TERROR. If USA has ever tried to develop this region economically Pakistan and Afghanistan have been on path to progress.

This means nothing. Mr Ghani represent National Alliance which was pro India since Masood days, so there is no surprise here but what people fail to see is that this Afghan government's influence does not go beyond Kabul, so that says it all.
Afghanistan is the country of warlords, who can easily be manipulated. The problem is today they are with you and tomorrow they are against you. I think it is about time the world learn its lessons that Afghanistan cannot be controlled by one country, the only way it will work is if all countries interest is protected otherwise whatever you do today is bound to be undone tomorrow.

Where was the friend (india) when Russian forces occupied Afghanistan in the 70s and millions of Afghans were driven out of their homes? Well they were on the Russian side. Pakistan took in most of the refugees (over 3 Mil) and provided military aid to fight the occupying forces.Afghanistan is free today because of Pakistan and It never asked anything in return. Just remember, Love is stronger than friendship.

@reality : We have good relation with nepal also.. And talking of afghan refugee in pakistan which is nearly 1.6 million , we host nearly 5 million nepali brothers.. While you pakistani always consider afghani's an outsider and want to throw them out, we Indian's are well mingled with Nepalese. The blockade was not from Indian side but it was due to their internal problems. We already have enough of Pakistani, Nepali, Bangladeshi refugees earning their bread & butter on our soil. They are usually welcomed here. Pakistan should bear their share of responsibility & take care of Afghani refugees as per UN regulations.

Silly people are talking about returns on investment. If you help your brother and neighbor for centuries in his hour of need, will you be looking for returns ? Afghanistan to day is in no position to honour any commitment, all help is needed to merely keep it functioning. When you give with an open heart with absolutely no strings attached, you win the affection of people. There is no bigger prize that can be won anywhere.

@Feroz Sir strings are attached and price tag is there if you have any doubt just google about number of Indian Consulates dotted along all border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. If you want to build and invest to spread love as brothers you do not need consulates placed on strategic locations . You have right to disagree but there is no concept of free lunches

There is internationally recognized border between Afghanistan and Pakistan and all those living in Pakistan very clearly know that they are not living on their native lands. Only rulers of Afghanistan and people like us assume that they think other ways

@Avinash Sir please with all due respect just google about Pakistan role in the world to Host refugees Pakistan is among top recognized countries by UN hosting refugees and that too more than 30 years. To tell you Afghan refugees are not discriminated for using health and education facilities in Pakistan and many have become Pakistani national and having peaceful lives. Hamid Kerzai and his family spent most of time in Pakistan and same is case with many Afghan ruling and working class

@Abbas Sir with all respect I think there is Unity Government in Afghanistan and Abdullah Abdullah is also stake holder in Afghanistan and last day I read something which he said about Ashraf Ghani but that was not good and I tend to agree with Abdullah as law and order situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating real fast and fear of Taliban is looming in cities like Kunduz and Lashkarga.

@Swetha Stable democratic and peaceful Afghanistan is the dream which Pakistan can think but sir there is way to stability and all which is building up in Afghanistan is adding to more chaos. How can I say it way to stability for Afghanistan when Kabul is becoming more and more hostile at Chamen and Toorkhum which are life lines for trade of landlocked country. When Kabul is not concerned about welfare of millions of Afghan refugees who have to pay the price of strained ties between Kabul and Islamabad. Sir with all due respect Kabul with the support of Delhi is doing same which it did at the time of USSR

Point 1: Pakistan should have let Afghans to be run over by RUssians.
Point 2: Afghans are happy for friendship with Indians because they got a buffer named as pakistan in between. otherwise no neighbour is happy as such with india.
Point 3: Afghans can not have a bright future without a long lasting future with Pakistan.
Point 4: Pakistanis are more trustable than iranians as majority of afghan business roots are still in Pakistan.

India has very emotional relationship with Afghan people. I still remember the story 'Kabuliwala'by Rabindranath Tagore. How can one forget the relationship of Rehman with the little girl in who he sees his daughter. By the way in India a large number of Afghans are studying in various universities. In Kolkata there is an Afghan colony. In Noida near Delhi there is Cricket academy for cricketers from Afghanistan and so on. What to say more?

Afghanistan has got every right to renew its friendship with India so does Pakistan with China. And, btw. erstwhile USSR did not want to loot Afghanistan but if you go through the history properly u would see an Afghanistan heading towards prosperity during the tenure of socialist government. It was the US overture which led the Afghanistan, what it has become, today. parameters.

PS Remember Afghan and Pakistan relations are only effected only until Ghani is in office...then normal services will resume....until then please pour as much money as possible and when Ghani is out we'll take care of the rest.

Very soon India is going to gift a grand cricket stadium to cricket crazy Afghan youth. All Indian investments are people centric. The projects like roads, dams, power plants, universities, renovated monuments will create jobs. India wants Afghanistan economy to generate more jobs to its people, so that they can return to their country and live life with dignity and self respect. As today itself Indian president inaugurated a common Bangla radio channel, for both India and Bangladesh people, on the same line I want India to start FM radio channels in all major cities in Afghanistan so that they can enjoy their own music as well as Bollywood music.
