KARACHI, Nov 19: Thousands of families residing in several buildings of Lyari’s D. D. Chaudhry Road and Baghdadi are being supplied contaminated water.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the water contains coliform and is hazardous to health.

The EPA recalled that the presence of biological contamination in drinking water has already resulted in two fatal incidents in Landhi’s Muslim Colony and Gadap’s Old Village, Thano Memon Goth, Landhi.

Expressing anger over the step-motherly treatment being meted out to the people residing on Baghdadi’s D D Chaudhry Road and Yousuf Haroon Road (West Roads No 1 and 2), members of Mohallah Committee said although the issue of contaminated water had been lingering on since long, the KWSB’s officials have not yet taken measures to rectify the fault.

“In fact, water being supplied to our locality for more than six months is not only bad in taste, but is also muddy, and might be having sewage contamination,” said Ibrahim Bhutto.

“Isn’t it an irony that at least 10 written complaints have been lodged during last six month, and neither the chief engineer, nor superintending engineer or others have taken any action, thereby they were forced to drink sub-soil unhygienic water, said Aziz Khatri, another resident.

Members of the Mohallah Committee also complained that a considerable water was being wasted from two leaking pipelines, near Moosa Colony’s maternity home, opposite police quarters.

They urged the Sindh chief minister to direct the KWSB to rectify the fault or else some serious abdominal diseases might break out in the affected locality.

Complaints of persisting water shortage have also been received from Ramswami, Kharadar, Clifton’s Block 2, Mehmoodabad, Gizri’s P&T Colony and parts of Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s Block 2.
