Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan and the daughter of prime minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, locked horns on social media after Imran accused the government of approving Rs430 million for the renovation of Nawaz Sharif’s personal home in Murree.
Maryam Nawaz was quick to respond on Twitter and defended her father’s name, clarifying that it was government property and not the personal house of the Sharif family.
The PTI chief had earlier tweeted saying the “government has approved Rs43o million for refurbishing Sharif's personal home in Murree using SAARC Summit in Murree as a pretext”, terming is a shameful act.
“This is not first time Sharifs have used public money on their properties. Rs 11 billion were spent on upgrading Raiwind estate and its environs,” he further wrote on the micro-blogging website.
Imran also claimed “it is due to such abuse of public money by our leaders that the people are reluctant to pay taxes”.
The issue didn’t settle on social media as Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid also issued a scathing statement in this regard and said the PTI chief was “hostage to his habit of telling lies”.
The minister went on to lambast Khan to a “lies manufacturing factory”, adding that “the PTI chief could not live without lying in his daily routine”.
The Governor House in Murree, which is being renovated, is not a private residence, Rashid said. “The PTI chairman should be ashamed of his baseless allegation in this regard.”
“Imran Khan has recently returned from Saudi Arabia after performing Umrah, however, it is regrettable that he has still not abandoned his bad habits,” the information minister maintained.
Considering these two replies as not being enough, the federal government took upon itself to issue a formal clarification on the matter as well.
“The Governor House in Murree is a historical government building which is being restored and refurbished for its preservation,” read a statement issued by a PM House spokesman on Sunday evening.
The statement further clarified that, “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had not stayed in this building for a single night during his current tenure.”
While referring to the “certain allegations” regarding allocation of funds on any private building in Murree, the PM House spokesperson said that these statements were “misplaced and wrong”.

Whoever's home it is, is it really necessary to spend $4.3 Million on just renovations? 99% of people can afford a $4.3 dollar house let alone for renovations. I have to side with IK, PM should set an example in country were the vast majority live in poverty.

Strange is that common person has not awakened yet. Public and most likely new generation is becoming aware of how these politicians and their family members are robbing the country. That time is not far when PPP and Nawaz establishment will come to an end. Currently Pakistan is in gripp of extreme corruption as it is prevalent in our all walks of life. It was only in 2011/12, when Mrs Marymam Safdar claimed on Pakistani TV that she had no properties in or out of Pakistan. With recent Panama leaks, official papers have surfaced which describe her as the beneficial owner of offshore companies which owned properties worth millions of pounds. It is worth noting that these papers were signed by Mrs Marymam Safdar. Prior to these leaks, her brother tried to put a spin on by stating that she was only a trustee. From what barrister Aitezaz Hussain, however, Pakistani legal system does not differentiate between a trustee/beneficial owner. If so, could Mrs Marymam Safdar please inform all her Pakistani brothers/sisters whether these companies were declared by her father or husband as required by Pakistani legal system?

The renovation will not be done by the PM he is not going to come lay bricks. It will be handed out to contractors who will need to go and hire laborers, electricians, plumbers, painters, mixers, carpenters and drivers etc.
So the money will create jobs, and at rhe same time restore and preserve a historical site, and that's how you alleviate poverty.
If you just handed out the money it will create inflation and affect us all. Take a course economics, major in government spending and you will understand.

I have to say to Maryam Nawaz please go and see the state of affairs of most government hospitals. Given that these hospitals are not used by Shareef family but still are used by human beings. This huge amount of money should be used for hospitals and schools and clean drinking water and not in governors house etc. I am sure the PM can use his own house in Murree for relaxation as he is not short of money. PM should set a personal example of leading a simple life and should not use any money for such things. I am sorry I have to agree with IK on this subject. There is no limit of greed and unnecessary use of public money in this country. There should be some mechanism of stopping the rulers if such things happen.

Why is the government spending such a hefty amount on renovating a building anyways specially if nobody is staying there, this expense can be postponed as this money can be spent on education and providing medical facilities to the people of Murree.

So it is not a Nawaz Sharif Home. But why a poor country should invest such a large amount on renovation, when a lot is needed for the Education, Health Services and development of infra-structure such as roads (Karachi roads are one example and the National Highway between Karachi and Hyderabad).

By looking at the standard of living and luxury which Sharif family enjoys, they don give it any importance to the amount being wasted on renovation of ceremonial Governor House. Instead that money should be spent on Health and education. Unfortunately these political elite had no feelings as they are busy in their cozy lives.

@Zubaida khan , in your zealous effort to quote economics 101, you seem to forget, that government process works differently and that to a Pakistani corrupt government. Where the procurement dept will seek out those vendors and contractors that it will assuredly receive the highest commission (kick backs) , shoddy quality of work and material where possible and will end up benefiting those that the the govt favors both externally and for itself.
So where does $4.3m has the the widest or the most expansive benefit. A chosen few elites, or the masses with recurring benefits to the people of Pakistan. Be more realistic when defending the indefensible -PMLN.

This is too much money to be spent on a government guest house and an unfair expense so shame on the government to approve such a heavy sum for such a petty reason. Imran khan should have stuck to the original news story and there was no need to add 'Personal Residence' if he knew very well this was not Nawaz Sharif's personal residence. Next time we will not believe whatever he says , if he lies like this again.
