ISLAMABAD: Owing to alleged negligence of staff, an ostrich died here at Marghazar Zoo on Tuesday, sources told Dawn.

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) officials said apparently the Ostrich died due to humidity. However, Member Environment Sanaullah Aman said that he had ordered an inquiry to ascertain the cause of death.

“Yes, an ostrich has died. At this stage I can’t say what caused its death. Our doctor provided it treatment, but could not save its life,” the member said.

The Islamabad Zoo is in a pathetic condition, where several animals are kept in poor condition, particularly the lone elephant, Kavaan, who has been in chains under a shabby sheds.

Located over a 25-acre expanse in the foothills of the Margallas, the zoo, which opened in 1978, is now a shadow of its former self. The king of the jungle – the lion – is nowhere to be seen, and the ever popular tigers are also conspicuous by their absence.

The lone crocodile has been kept in a small enclosure, out of public view. However, member Environment said that CDA had decided to upgrade the Zoo. “We have decided to improve this worthy facility, our talks with some national and international companies are underway,” he said.
