COLOMBO, Dec 28: Kumar Sangakkara and Tilan Samaraweera made centuries as Sri Lanka piled up 586 for six declared on the second day of the first Test against Zimbabwe on Friday.

Wicketkeeper Sangakkara, batting at three, made 128 and number seven Samaraweera an unbeaten 123 at the Sinhalese SC ground.

Zimbabwe, in reply, lost opener Hamilton Masakadza almost immediately before bad light ended proceedings on 14 for one.

Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya, with 92, and Hashan Tillakaratne, with 96, were the other main Sri Lankan contributors, while pace bowler Chaminda Vaas lashed a career-best 74 not out.

Heath Streak was the best of the bowlers, taking three for 113, while spinner Travis Friend and pace bowler Henry Olonga each conceded more than 100 runs without taking a wicket.

Sangakkara, resuming on 62 not out with Sri Lanka on 211 for three, was dismissed in controversial circumstances.

The left-hander, scoring freely, batted just short of five hours and faced 166 balls, hitting 22 fours and a six. He was out cutting a delivery from Gary Brent to Craig Wishart at slip, who juggled the ball before holding it at the second attempt.

Sangakkara, apparently unconvinced the catch had been completed cleanly, returned to the pavilion shaking his head.

After his exit, Tillakaratne was joined in a century partnership of 130 by Samaraweera.

Tillakaratne was just four runs short of a 10th test hundred before chasing a wide ball outside off and nicking a catch behind.

Zimbabwe were further frustrated by another century partnership for the seventh wicket between Samaraweera and Vaas.

Samaraweera faced 166 balls and hit 12 fours and a six while Vaas’s runs came off 113 deliveries with two sixes and nine fours as 136 runs were plundered in just under two hours without the pair being parted.
