Rauf (left) will be barred from umpiring or being associated with any BCCI-related activities. — AFP

Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf has been banned for five years by the Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) on charges of 'corruption and misconduct', Hindustan Times reported.

Rauf, who was recognised as one of the top umpires in the world alongside compatriot Aleem Dar, will be barred from umpiring or being associated with any BCCI-related activities. It is unclear whether the ban would also be applicable in the international arena.

The Pakistani umpire was accused of involvement in a match-fixing controversy engulfing the megabucks Indian Premier League (IPL) competition and the International Cricket Council pulled him from the 2013 Champions Trophy amid reports he was under police investigation.

Media in India alleged Rauf had been in contact with Bollywood actor Vindu Dara Singh Randhawa, arrested on charges of acting as middleman between bookies, players and officials, but the umpire insisted he was innocent.

But a BCCI disciplinary committee, formed to investigate the case, finally announced its judgment on Friday, finding Rauf guilty of corruption under articles 2.2.2, 2.3.2, 2.3.3 and 2.4.1 of the board's Anti-corruption Code.

The 59-year-old umpire did not appear before the committee but sent his preliminary statement on January 15 and a written statement responding to the allegations on February 8 and these were considered before a final judgement was handed out.

Rauf included in the Elite Panel in 2006 after making his debut in 2000 and has officiated in 49 Tests, 98 ODIs and 23 T20 internationals.

We Pakistani are very innocent people, always get caught. Learn from Indians, Australians and Britians. They are the master minds of every bookie event, never get caught.

Apache Feb 12, 2016 03:33pm

Who is BCCI to ban an international umpire? Oh sorry I forgot BCCI is ICC

sandeep Feb 12, 2016 03:34pm

sensible decision

lafanga Feb 12, 2016 03:35pm

Mumbai and Dubai are the epicenters of world wide cricket corruption and gambling. Perhaps other sports as well.

NAEEM FAKIR Feb 12, 2016 03:36pm

What about their own Umpires?

Ali jee Feb 12, 2016 03:38pm

Ok but if he done that yes it should be life ban and put him jail but India can't just say he only can't do it in India if he not ban from international cricket every where..all crooks are in India

Muhammed Ali UK Feb 12, 2016 03:41pm

Did he get any PCB backing?

sana Feb 12, 2016 03:42pm

We should form our own international cricketing body on the lines of ICC and call it WCC and should keep out India from it .

truth Feb 12, 2016 03:43pm

@Apache yes you are forgotten.

Pakistani-Australian Feb 12, 2016 03:45pm

There's something fishy happening in the background of this. Sreesanth was acquitted of his spot fixing allegations even though he had confessed to it. His cousin was caught spot fixing as well, yet they are still banned for life by the BCCI. Asad Rauf seems to have been thrown under the bus by the BCCI when there has been no clear evidence against him. The Mumbai and Delhi Police have already shown their incompetence, their lack of teamwork and corrupting has lead to more corruption in the IPL

adil Feb 12, 2016 03:46pm

No Proof no nothing, just allegations and ban wow.

Muhammad Tahir Jamali Feb 12, 2016 03:49pm

ICC should look into the matter. Is BCCI can ban anyone without the consent of ICC.

Rohit1 Feb 12, 2016 03:49pm

@sana.. WCC would be funded by?

Ailly Feb 12, 2016 03:52pm

if you ask India will not even share this proof with us... nevertheless, who cares about BCCI banning a Pak umpire, it was inevitable and bound to happen. BIG3 must be dismantled with all resting powers in order to give respite to this gentlemen's game. else, it might face NBA fate which is most money paying league, yet played in USA alone....

ind played a real nasty part in grabbing the power of this game, which in result is giving more pain to other members and that's being observed by other partners in BIG3; Aus and Eng with a mindset to streamline the stagnation which is occupying ICC...

Inqelab Zindabad Feb 12, 2016 03:53pm

@Apache So this will nicely serve as a reminder.

sana Feb 12, 2016 03:53pm

@Rohit1 Crowd funding

Azmeen Feb 12, 2016 03:54pm

Why only Pak empire? Are all Indian empires innocent? Anyway Indian abuse of Pakistanis is common.

Sensible Feb 12, 2016 03:54pm

Not sure why Pakistanis are angered?? because even Indian players found guilty are in jail and teans have been also banned...So isn't this reasonable decision that he got banned being found guilty??

sana Feb 12, 2016 03:57pm

@Azmeen This is called abuse of power , don't worry we will give befitting reply to BCCI.

Desi Bhai Feb 12, 2016 03:57pm

@sana you are funny. Good luck!

Tahir Feb 12, 2016 03:58pm

What a joke by bcci anybody should be banned the player like donni and Raina and the other player from the ipl what happen to them what a joke by bcci the most croupt

Naxalite Feb 12, 2016 04:03pm

Its Funny when BCCI talks about Corruption.

Naxalite Feb 12, 2016 04:03pm

In what capacity did BCCI ban an umpire. If all Cricket Boards start playing politics like BCCI is doing then forget Cricket.

BCCI Feb 12, 2016 04:08pm

Who is BCCI to ban an international umpire? Oh sorry I forgot BCCI is ICC

Learn to know facts before opening your mouth.

Ban is related with BCCI events only. And it's BCCI's event so they have right to ban

tanweer Feb 12, 2016 04:10pm

taking politics in cricket to next level. well done BCCI

Changez_Khan Feb 12, 2016 04:15pm

BCCI is full of political mud. This is no surprise, these people in India hate Pakistanis no matter what field they are in,

Nikhil Feb 12, 2016 04:17pm

BCCI has also banned 2 IPL teams as well as some players for match fixing and betting charges. Those who think Pakistan should go ahead and start an international cricket governing body, well who is stopping you? If you keep India out where will you get the money from? So please think before you talk.

naeem Feb 12, 2016 04:29pm

So an Indian film actor was involved, umpires were involved but no Indian player is involved....BRAVO!!

indian Feb 12, 2016 04:30pm

@sana you cant afford it with out india in there.

krezy Feb 12, 2016 04:33pm

No feelings for Asad... But should not ICC have investigated this... Further, BCCI has plenty other cases of corruption cases (rather, the cases which can shake the very foundation of BCCI), and lack of probe on them...

Amir Feb 12, 2016 04:37pm

does it really matter. Drama queen (BCCI) will keep on doing drama.

Sandeep Singh Feb 12, 2016 04:37pm

@Muhammad Tahir Jamali ICC doesn't select umpires of IPL. BCCI does.

Ailly Feb 12, 2016 04:44pm

I will ask all indians show us one incident of cricket related fixing where indian bookies are not involved. show us just one such incident. ? why don we ban india altogether from cricket ?

Alam Feb 12, 2016 04:45pm

He alone culprit in the case? No one else involved in this case? Now left Aleem Dar, matter of time when. Two teams of IPL banned but no player one guilty

Asim ali farooqui Feb 12, 2016 04:51pm

Asad Rauf, BCCI have to give him full chance of explanation in present of ICC, he was international fame empire, getting high salary and involving in patty things to involve Pakistan name, this is shame full for BCCI, India have to look there own house to clear, some time ago one fast bowler, one or two players, one owner''s husband was involved in fixing, PCB completely back Pak members in everywhere, These foreign bodies have no authority to litigation on Pak, Asad Rauf by BCCI, Danish Kaniera by ECB. PCB should strong and strong.

Alam Feb 12, 2016 04:53pm

@Nikhil Teams banned but any player?

The Right Left Feb 12, 2016 04:54pm

@Sensible the key word being "found guilty" which is yet to be proven. How to decide someone is guilty before the evidence is even presented ?

Salman Feb 12, 2016 04:56pm

This is absolutely ridiculous! How can BCCI place a ban on an umpire without any proof / solid evidence? I hope ICC doesnt follow this stupid decision and carries out an independent investigation to ascertain actual facts. Unless proved guilty, Asad Rauf should be allowed to supervise international matches without any break

Rahul Feb 12, 2016 04:58pm

@sana - "crowd funding"

Then what is stopping you now?

Fried Chillies Feb 12, 2016 04:59pm

@lafanga Indians lost bulk of their matches in Dubai during 80s. What are you trying to tell us Indians!!!

Qaisar Feb 12, 2016 05:00pm

Please ban IPL not Asad Rauf.

Naxalite Feb 12, 2016 05:01pm

History will remember BCCI and Sri Nivasan for Spoiling this Gentlemen Game.

Rahul Feb 12, 2016 05:02pm

@naeem - S Sreesanth was involved. He's banned for life. So was another domestic level player Ankeet Chavan

Pankaj Feb 12, 2016 05:06pm

@Ali jee: There is no law against this in Indian constitution for private employee. And since BCCI is register as a private company in India and here umpire has broke company's law not country's law he is punished as per BCCI rule book for IPL.

Aavinaash Feb 12, 2016 05:07pm

Asad has been banned by bcci, Pakistan and other countries can continue using his services going forward that is if guys trust him.

Vectra Feb 12, 2016 05:08pm

1st India punished their own like banned Shreesant, suspended two IPL teams contract, ousted Srinivasan even if he is not involved in fixing but his son in law was etc etc ten how can one expect that its will forgive Asad Rauf??

Good thing is IPL 2013 clean up is nearing conclusion.Good going BCCI who never puts things under carpet

Saeed Masood Feb 12, 2016 05:16pm

If he did it he should be punished...but what about India themselves...the inventors of this crime in cricket...if a fair investigation is done many Indian players and official will be in trouble...

M. Siddique Feb 12, 2016 05:17pm

Has BCCI been infiltrated by Shev Sena? Excluding Pakistan from Cricket in India will eventually hurt Indian cricket.

Aavinaash Feb 12, 2016 05:22pm

@Saeed Masood action has been taken against Vindoo, srinivas and son in law, srisanth and other realistic and practical there has to be an example made out of guys can continue using his services so can other countries.....we won't.

VK, Pul Bangash, Dilli Feb 12, 2016 05:32pm

Pretty much, nowadays !!!

AD Feb 12, 2016 05:33pm

@sandeep what about IPL fixing and there players involvement in fixing ?

kuladeep patil Feb 12, 2016 05:43pm

Dear pakistani Friends,

Dont you remember Ex indian Players M.Azhar, N Mongiya, A Jadeja life time banned due to match fixing..

BCCI has banned Pakistani Umpire for BCCI events, Based on Investigation. If he is innocent , he should prove.

Irrespective of country There should not be mercy for any Players /umpire who is involved in match fixing , and same must be punished severely .

Amir Shah Feb 12, 2016 05:45pm

@Nikhil agree, BCCI certainly banned the two teams but what happened to the players of those teams, surprise surprise they have been inducted to newly formed teams. So here is the hypocrisy, teams are banned but those players are allowed to continue in new teams including Dhoni who was considered to be master mind behind some of the gambling drama. None of the these players have been banned at all despite the proof of their involvement.

kashmiri Feb 12, 2016 05:58pm

@Pakistan Zindabad first they blocked CSK and RR then nly banned ur umpire...!!! be sense

Just Someone Feb 12, 2016 05:59pm

@Nikhil : It was not BCCI. It was the Indian Supreme Court who suspended those two IPL teams, and for two years only. BCCI on the contrary found nothing wrong with what had happened and rather promoted the then BCCI chairman and father-in-law of one of the accused to the post of the ICC Chairman. Moreover they fought tooth and nail a legal battle to ensure that these teams and people did not get banned. Get your facts right.

People of Pakistan Feb 12, 2016 06:00pm

Pakistan should not play cricket in India, Government of India has bad intentions, don't even think going there, not only security issue but lot more.

SKG Feb 12, 2016 06:01pm

@Ailly Please go head and ban.

Just Someone Feb 12, 2016 06:03pm

Moreover they fought tooth and nail a legal battle to ensure that these teams and people did not get banned. Zidane Feb 12, 2016 07:03pm

Before criticizing Mr. Rauf we check the evidences against him. If Mr. Rauf culpable then it means the entire IPL blameworthy. It shows that betting in IPL at its peak, and there is common environment of betting which even attract the umpires to "make hay while the sun shine". Every one knows IPL is almost fixed league. Instead of BCCI clean their league, accused Mr. Rauf to defame Pakistan. Is Mr. Rauf Only umpire which is involved? or not a single player involve in this fixing? Why Rauf? please think before criticizing....

$aifuddin Takhtawala Feb 12, 2016 07:07pm

It seems like never ending saga. ICC need to do sole searching and come up with some kind of reamady. Banning few players and umpires is not going to resolve it. The question lies ahead is how to nip the evil in the bud.

kumar Feb 12, 2016 07:13pm

@Pakistani-Australian. It is only the court which has let sreesanth out because there were no enough evidence but BCCI ban stays.

Zain Feb 12, 2016 07:18pm

Not surprised at , all here that are balking at other countries we need to clear our house before saying ... How come they don't get caught we are all so innocent ... Our culture is cut root to the core and these things will show up here and there. Admit and try to find out what the hell is going on with our nation ?

irfan Feb 12, 2016 07:22pm

Karachi Wala Feb 12, 2016 07:22pm

Where are we? Feb 12, 2016 07:32pm

IPL is the epicenter of all corruption and spreaded this disease in all ICC member countries.

Rational Feb 12, 2016 07:43pm

What about Dhoni?

N_Saq Feb 12, 2016 07:44pm

It's typical replies from Pak supporters, if ECB or ACB have banned the umpire then he must have done something wrong but since it is BCCI who banned the umpire so we have a problem (Typical SE Asian mentality).

He was officiating in India in an Indian Premier League making lots of money, however, no one in Pak have any problem there, right? So my friends when you play with fire chances are your hands get burned :)

Ravee Feb 12, 2016 07:46pm

A scapegoat.

pk Feb 12, 2016 08:01pm

@krezy Allegations was during IPL..a domestic game in India.

daada Feb 12, 2016 08:04pm

wait a second so a NOT PROVEN "middleman" gets banned. ok makes alot of sense! Even if proven guilty, shouldn't the other two parties be banned to participate which he was playing middle man to!?

Abdulla Hussain Feb 12, 2016 08:11pm

IPL has given lots of controversies & corruption to Cricket. Starting just couple of years ago IPL has shown its true colours.

Blue Feb 12, 2016 08:24pm

BCCI found some evidence and banned him from BCCI's events simple .. if Mr Umpire has any objection he can go to any indian court and get himself clean chit!

AD (Canada) Feb 12, 2016 08:35pm

Has the ICC banned him as well cause I haven't seen him on the international circuit for a long long time. Very strange.

Zafar Feb 12, 2016 08:42pm

How can an umpire be involved in match fixing? They can be biased, but accusing an umpire of match fixing is beyond ridiculous. This does bring to mind Pakistan's victories in India back in the 80s despite all out attempts by Indian umpires to not give Indian batsman out for LBWs.

Vorshal Feb 12, 2016 08:51pm

@Abdulla Hussain -- May I remind you there have been lots of controversies in ODIs and Test matches involving Pakistan well before IPL. So, just think before you show off your wisdom!

Jahanzaib Feb 12, 2016 08:53pm

Wow an umpire banned but dhoni and co are still playing in the team. Gautam gambhir has been seen with a bookie and so has suresh raina. But ICC is actually Indian Cricket Council.

pervez Feb 12, 2016 10:19pm

I blame the PCB and it's inept leadership. If pakistan pull out at the last minute from major evens the world of cricket will be in term oil.

Ash20 Feb 12, 2016 10:27pm

Typical response from our friends on the other side of border. Mr. Rauf was given ample chance to prove his innocence and was asked to appear before investigation committee but he chose not to attend but reply by mail only. He was even given extended time to reply as he did'nt replied earlier to the charges which BCCI got some proof.

Why u want to support somebody who was proven guilty by an investigation committee but you can obviously challenge it in court. BCCI only has authority to ban in its event therefore he was banned only for it. It is up to ICC if he need to be banned from international circuit.

Zak Feb 12, 2016 11:13pm

desidude Feb 13, 2016 02:58am

BCCI and IPL are private enterprises. This is not a criminal trial, with the usual rules of proof that are required of criminal trials. They just have to follow the rules of employment. BCCI has no jurisdiction over actors or bookies or other people who are not part of the IPL itself, so it cannot "ban" them. It can only fire its employees, which it has done. Similar to how NFL does with its umpires and referees. If over time it turns out that BCCI is acting capriciously, people will stop watching the games. So that's the check on its power.

Ravi Feb 13, 2016 03:15am

@sana Made my day :D

badshah Feb 13, 2016 03:55am

@Pankaj BCCI has no laws. They make them when need arises to meet their goals and ambitions.

essjay Feb 13, 2016 04:55am
  1. BCCI has the right to ban the umpire because BCCI had hired/contracted him for a job.
  2. I as an employer have all the right in the world to hire or fire my employees. Period. If I have any doubts about my employee, i wont take him to court or ask permission or approval from other companies, I will simply fire the employee.
  3. If someone has a problem with it, he /she has to challenge that in the court.
  4. BCCI did not say he is banned from umpiring in the rest of the world.
  5. Just because the umpire is your compatriot, it does not mean he is innocent.
  6. And FYI, just check out how many Indian nations BCCI has banned, not for 5 years, but for life.
  7. Grow up and develop some logical and analytical reasoning.

@sana the most common line used no matter what the issue maybe " we will give befitting reply " what a joke .
