GUJRANWALA, Nov 2: The customs collectorate sought permission from the Central Board of Revenue for raids on the godowns of traders for recovery of smuggled goods.
It is learnt that a summary was sent to CBR chairman in Islamabad on Saturday for approval.
Sources said the customs anti smuggling squad sought permission for raids when five people arrested with a huge quantity of smuggled cloth and electronic goods told them that smuggled articles had been stored by traders in their secret godowns in and around the city.
THEATRES RAIDED: Judicial magistrates on Sunday conducted raids on various theatres, cinemas and video shops and arrested around a dozen actors, actresses, operators and other people for spreading lewdness.
The raids were conducted on the orders of a local district and sessions judge after he received reports that there was no let up in vulgarity at stage dramas and cinemas.
The police sent the arrested to jail after registering cases against them.
Meanwhile, the district coordination officer issued directives to all government officials concerned to check obscenity with an iron hand otherwise a strict action would be taken against them.
DOZEN HELD: Around a dozen butchers and shopkeepers of Ramazan Bazaar were caught red-handed on Sunday while selling substandard stuff at higher rates in Ghakkhar town.
The Ramazan Bazaar has been set up along the GT Road to provide commodities and meat to the people on fixed prices proposed by the district price control committee.
On receiving information about the foul play, the checking teams of Wazirabad tehsil administration raided various shops and arrested butchers and shopkeepers for overcharging and selling putrid meat and other substandard commodities.
ARRESTED: A proclaimed offender was arrested by Aroop police after a brief encounter here on Sunday.
The police on a tip-off that accused was present in his outhouse raided there and arrested him.
