SRINAGAR: Lawmakers from India's ruling Hindu nationalist party in India-held Kashmir have kicked and punched an independent member of the state assembly for hosting a party where he served beef. Slaughtering of cows is banned in most Indian states.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members beat lawmaker Engineer Rashid Ahmed, a Muslim, in the assembly soon after its session began Thursday.

Other opposition lawmakers rescued Ahmed and later staged a walkout.

The ruling party lawmakers were angry over a party hosted by Ahmed the previous night at which he served beef.

Differences have deepened within Kashmir's ruling coalition, with the Hindu nationalist party demanding a ban on slaughtering cows and selling beef in the Muslim-majority state.

Moves to protect cows have intensified since Modi's Hindu nationalist BJP came to power after general elections last May.

Many Hindus regard the cow as the living symbol of their religion and consider it sacred. Hindu welfare organisations run gaushalas, or cow shelters, in many cities where abandoned cows found wandering the streets are given food and shelter.

Feeding a cow is seen by many Hindus as a way to appease the gods and get one’s wishes fulfilled.

So sad that India is treating all neighbors badly , we are with Pakistan on Kashmir issue and will support Pakistan whenever it needs us, India should vacate Kashmir soon and ensure peace prevails in subcontinent.

Kashmir is supposed to be a Muslim majority state. How come bjp law makers punch a Muslim law maker and get away with it? Should Kashmiri muslims vote for Abdullahs and Muftis again, whose rule has belittled Kashmiris to this level?

Dr.Shahmir Baloch Oct 08, 2015 06:16pm

When religious doctrine is the law of the land, most likely you're living in a theocracy, not in democracy. There's not a lot of room for dissent in theocracies, where priests are in charge and say they are speaking for God. A democracy is ruled by dēmos, "the people." Is india moving to theocracy from supposed to be the largest democracy ?

What a height of hypocrisy. India will slaughter its holly cows for beef exports and earn cash, yet wont let its Muslim population eat the beef due to so called religious sentiments. Why the world and international community take India seriously and project it , its just way beyond any logical comprehension.

zafar Iqbal Oct 08, 2015 06:44pm

Hypocrite BJP should ban the export of beef out of India and severe the ties with America as it is the biggest producer and consumer of beef.

Great work BJP- show the true colors of secular India

Lafanga Oct 08, 2015 07:45pm

I will take a balanced approach for a moment and say that if Hindus regard cows sacred then they have the right to limit or ban the slaughter of cows. No issues.

BUT India is the second largest exporter of beef in the world. This is a fact so all the cries about beef ban are just hypocrisy of the highest order.

SO this brings me right back to my original position. BJP are just a bunch of hypocrites. This entire beef ban is a drama to persecute Muslims. This is the true intention.

M Jamal Oct 08, 2015 07:47pm

We must be tolerant and respect each others religious beliefs. The minorities, the muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and the others must have good and cordial relations with the majority Hindu and vice versa. We must love and not hate each other.

As a practicing muslim I respect hindus religous beliefs and will not serve beef to an indian or make fun of him for not eating beef but no one has the right to threaten or stop a muslim from eating or beaf or serving it to willing people.....this exttemistcagenda of bjp shows kashmir can never b with india

Syed Oct 08, 2015 08:12pm

@Sadhu never ever doubt two nation theory again. If you have problem with minority eating food of their choice then let them do do in their own sovereign state.

aamir Oct 08, 2015 08:15pm

Dear India you dont want to eat beef then quit occupying Kashmir and move out. Kashmiris are a separate nation with alignment with Pakistan and sooner or later will become part of Pakistan. Dont make it painful for yourself.

sri1 Oct 08, 2015 08:40pm

@nepali I am almost sure that you are no Nepali. Most honest Nepalis have still not forgotten all the crucial help and resources that India poured into Nepal soon after your crippling earthquake. Of course, the Nepali civilian leadership was shamed badly by your people. Almost all the citizens really appreciated the Indian response and the politicians have been trying to get back at India politically ever since.

Ibrar Oct 08, 2015 08:40pm

@k_k Wrong! The 5000 years civilisation has failed to survive many times. The last time it fell apart was in 1947!

Anil Oct 08, 2015 08:47pm

Certainly, neither the BJP nor the MLA in question is doing any good to society. He could quietly have exercised his right than using this as a tool to badger BJP. BJP, for its part uses all these gimmicks before any important election. However, the most surprising element is hysterical reactions from our Pakistani brothers, who seem difficult to reconcile with flourishing democracy in India., Appreciating some one's forte is signs of magnamity and reacting otherwise only exposes ones acute shortcomings.

A Z I Oct 08, 2015 09:06pm

Kashmir is a disputed area and members J & K assembly should also approach U.N. General Secretary and ask for their right of self determination promised to them and highlight the Indian atrocities during the past 25 years. Follow the foot steps of Azam Khan. That is the only way forward for your freedom from India.

BRILLIANT MAN Oct 08, 2015 09:18pm

Yes, we want Hindu Republic of India...but this is not the way.

Gaurav Oct 08, 2015 09:43pm

We cannot have export of milk producing cows go down by consuming them internally. Indian cows are not fit for beef consumption, good only for milk.

Talha Oct 08, 2015 09:58pm

@sri1 India didn't do any favor to help Nepal at the time of Nepal's earthquake. Most countries of the world somehow helped and continue to help Nepal after the devastating earthquake. It was a humanitarian act of helping fellow humans, not worthy of self-publicity like the way you are doing. Everybody helped Nepal out of humanity and not because they would use that as an opportunity to remind the Nepalase people of the "so called" favor they did. Today marks 10 years of Pakistan's worst ever earthquake. People of Pakistan feel the pain of Nepalese people and pray for not only Pakistan's earthquake victims but also for those who suffered in Nepal.

Dr. Salaria, Aamir Ahmad Oct 08, 2015 09:59pm

this beef matter , it's been an issue for many centuries so actually nothing new , British coined the phrase holy cows as sign of exclamation to a trivial matter getting out of hand but then some animals have religious significance so these types of matter flare up when those animals are involved . This is not a one animal only club that creating controversy , there is another animal also that can flare up sentiments if touched , so look at it that way that this is surely a matter for some and trivial for some depending upon what animal gets involved .

The real issue is India being ruled by Muslims for over a 1000 years has sown such deep resentment for Muslims and since independence it seems like it is time to get even. Jinnah was in the camp for a long time that India should not be split and should stay as one country until he realized that Muslims will always be suppressed there. This will go on for many generations to come... not saying that every Indian is closed minded but perhaps there should be a study on the psyche of Indians to understand the impact of Muslim rule. India has never been a world power and will never realize that dream if the society is based on unjust rules. And pls. don't start comparing things with Pakistan - lots of issues in Pak but it is not beating the drums to be the next super power.

Saqib UK Oct 09, 2015 12:02am

fawad Oct 09, 2015 12:40am

@Anil i certainly agree with ur point about us Pakistanis been hysterical about the whole saga.. because this is historical in nature as it will have repercussions in future..i have waited for this for a long time..every nation has some weaknesses(apparent or other wise) India has its fare share.. but this is whole new level..a nation breaker in itself..lets hope the situation escalates,,the whole world will know ur true face..we have our problems some of which were created by others but most are of our own making and u people always take higher moral ground on vast array of issues surrounding us but thanks good no more.. after the moral degradation(Delhi..rape capital of the world) it is the best thing that is happening to you..perhaps the logical end to so called democracy and start of disintegration of India as its auger well for whole region and beyond...

Cyrus Oct 09, 2015 05:04am

@Lafanga .... The solution is very simple. Export India's excess of cattle and use the profits to import beef from Argentina.

ZI Oct 09, 2015 05:15am

@Sadhu Why dont the court put a ban on beef export also which is 90% owned by Hindus. Do you think the exported cows are worshiped overseas?????? Your PM is saving all these cows to be exported as India has become worlds largest Livestock exporter.

Mr Modi and all those Indians supporting beef ban just for Muslims should hang their heads in shame.
