KARACHI, Oct 12: The secretary general of the National Alliance, Muhammad Ali Durrani, has demanded that a parliamentary committee comprising the members of Senate and the National Assembly should be constituted to ensure autonomy to the provinces by transferring power from the Centre to the provinces.

He said that the powers from the provinces had already been transferred to the lower level councils under devolution plan, however, the powers pledged to be transferred from the Centre to provinces had not been devolved so far.

Mr Durrani, who is also the secretary general of the Millat Party, was addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club on Sunday. He said that his party had launched its mass contact campaign in Sindh from Karachi. He further said that two public meetings in this connection had been planned in the interior of Sindh before Ramazan.

Flanked by Nadeem Mirza and Mumtaz Hameed, Mr Durrani said that water was an important issue, as its shortage had been affecting the economy of each province.

He said that dams and other water reservoirs could contribute to the prosperity of the country, but if they caused dissension, they should not be initiated at all until a consensus was built.

Mr Durrani said that the Millat Party was not dissenting group of any party as such no question arisis of its merger.

He said that the Parliament could not play its due role of legislation to solve problems of people due to the opposition’s politics of “Go Musharraf” and “No LFO”.
