Prayer leader jailed for five years over hate speech

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court sentenced on Tuesday a prayer leader of Kasur to five years in jail for delivering a hate speech at a public gathering.
A case under Section 9 of the Anti-Terrorism Act had been registered against Qari Abubakar at Kot Radha Kishan police station on a complaint lodged by a sub-inspector.
According to the prosecution, the prayer leader was inciting people against a particular religious sect and he was arrested on the spot.

The prosecution also produced before the court the video recording of the speech.
The accused denied the charge and took the plea that he did not attend the gathering. The defence counsel accused police of implicating his client in a fabricated case and requested the court to acquit him.
After going through the case, Judge Haroon Latif sentenced the cleric to five-year term. According to an official, 21 people have been convicted this year of delivering hate speeches. Some of them had been jailed for up to eight years. Two of them are from Lahore.

Messages of hate should not be tolerated regardless of the origin. The perpetrator of these crimes should attend reform schools under going proper rehabilitation instead of becoming hard-core hatemonger in jails. Meanwhile, all the mosques, Imam-Baras, Jammat-kahanas and other religious and no-religious institutes, traditionally delivering hate messages covertly or openly, should be scrutinized to help develop a peaceful society.

A heartening news at last!! To get rid of extremism, it’s essential to tackle it at initiation levels rather than getting people killed and then hanging people (though it is equally important that those who have committed these sins are brought o justice after a due process of law & should be made an example) Punishments are fundamentally meant to work as deterrent/ reason for not attempting to break the law.

Good . Keep Professors of all universities under close watch as well. The terrorist in recent bus attack were students from some well known universities . No reason why Professors and Lecturers from such places should be dealt with gently !
