KARACHI, Oct 1: Mr Islamuddin’s Roberto Carlos Fan who was deprived of a victory on Sunday when the race was cancelled on frivolous grounds won the concluding event of the day after being backed confidently by the followers of form on Wednesday.

He was smartly ridden by M. Barani and was sent out by young Moheyuddin who deserves the credit of keeping his charges in top condition.

Though some of the racegoers were in two minds, the owners backed the horse with confidence and the winner gave no anxious moments, a rare feat at the Karachi races where horses never run two races alike even from the leading stables.

On a day when favourites and neglected horses shared the day’s honour, the racegoers foiled the bid of the people sitting in the glass house to fix the race on Sapno Ki Rani who was installed half-money favourite against Sherganzer who was tipped in these columns as the day’s best bet.

Sherganzer opened a 40 to 100 on favourite but its price swelled to three to two while Sapno Ki Rani was backed down from four to one to half money.

The racegoers who were taken for a ride on Sunday sensed foul play and raised slogans against the stewards who sensing some real trouble ordered re-betting and Sherganzer opened 60 to 100 favourite and after being backed by the right connections won as he liked. Sapno Ki Rani even failed to figure on the board after going abegging at three to one.

Dauntless, the only thoroughbred running in last but one division who was another certainty was not allowed to run on merit and the horse finished half a length behind the winner Royal Beauty.

The rider of Dauntless, Nisar Ahmad perhaps had instructions to only place his charge as he acted in a most daring manner when his charge came flying on the outside.

Nisar instead of riding out his mount looked all along in the straight on the front runner. He passed the winning post when he made sure that he had accomplished the job.

Besides Sherganzer and Roberto Carlos Fan, Your Opinion was another horse which recorded an impressive win.

Deniro won the fourth race when he was backed down to half-money from five to two by the connections and won like a champion as he was cut above class but was not genuinely tried in his previous outings.

Only on last Sunday he had not run prominently in any part of the race while he showed vast improvement in just three days which by all racing standards amounted to in-and-out running but it is nothing new at Karachi races which are not conducted under any rules.

The next Gymkhana races will be held on Sunday.
