LAHORE: Provincial Zakat Council on Thursday approved release of Rs53.905 million under the head of educational scholarships for general institutions and religious seminaries throughout Punjab.
Presided over by its chairman retired justice Akhtar Hasan, the council decided to release Rs28.509 million for 5,032 girls and boys studying in 115 educational institutions of 13 districts while Rs25.396 million for 7,274 girl and boy students of 69 religious seminaries in eight districts.
Zakat and Ushr Department Secretary Habibur Rehman Gilani, representatives of finance, local government and community development besides social welfare departments also attended the meeting.
The meeting approved nomination of Aamir Saeed Ansari as chairman, Ms Abida Bashir and Syed Aghaz Husain Shah in district Zakat committees of Multan, Jhang and Vehari besides nomination of district Zakat committee members in 26 districts.
The meeting also approved payment of scholarship to girls and boys studying in technical training institutes under the aegis of the Punjab Vocational Training Council through branchless banking and increased their monthly scholarship from Rs2,500 to Rs3,000.
The council also decided that financial assistance should be provided to the girls and boys who have completed their education from technical training institutes to start their own businesses. — Staff Reporter
