ISLAMABAD, Sept 22: The officials of the ‘secret agencies’ on Sunday visited the International Islamic University (IIU) and checked the record of foreign students studying in various departments.

A team of officials led by a senior officer visited the administration block of the university in the afternoon and the staff presented the relevant record for checking to the investigating team.

The team specifically checked the number of students from Indonesia and Malaysia, who are studying in the IIU and also their stay in the country.

Sources said the investigations were part of the process already being undertaken by the government to check the students from these two particular countries.

On Saturday, 17 students belonging to Indonesia and Malaysia were taken into custody from Karachi for their alleged involvement in ‘undesirable activities’. Most of those detained in Karachi were also studying in different religious institutions.

On Sunday, the team which visited the IIU only checked the record of the students and no further move was made. However, sources said a second or may be more such visits by the officials from the investigating agencies could not be ruled out.

The team, however, had not tried to approach the student hostels or to meet any of the students whose records they checked.

The sources said these students from Indonesia and Malaysia were being checked for their possible links with the hard-line Jamiah Islamia of Indonesia, a group blamed for the Bali bombing incident in which a large number of foreign tourists were killed.
