BADIN, Sept 21: Abdul Salam Memon, general secretary of the Army Welfare Sugar Mill workers union, Badin, who began fast unto death four days back in front of the mills’ main gate, fell unconscious on Sunday morning.

His condition was continuously deteriorating and he was put on medication and given intravenous fluids.

The demand included stopping the hostile and crude behaviour of the mill management for having imposed a ban on their CBA workers union.

Nine more workers — Shabiul Hassan, Khalid Mehmood, Noor Mohammad, Chacha Issa, Atta Mohammad, Tahir Jaffar, Ruknuddin, Wali Shaikh and Haji Alamgir — joined the strike.

SOLIDARITY EXPRESSED: The Badin MPA, Dr Sikandar Ali Mandhro, also observed token hunger strike for four hours with the workers to express solidarity with them on Sunday.

On this occasion, Dr Mandhro assured the mill workers that every worker of his party, i.e. the PPP, would not hesitate to play his part in their struggle.

SUPPORT EXTENDED: The district Nazim, Kamal Khan Chang, Taluka Nazim Dr Musarrat Hussain Khwaja and eight Awam Dost Nazims of various union councils have extended their support to the workers.

On the other hand, president of the AWS workers union, Iqbal Mariyar, on Sunday held a meeting, which was attended by at least 200 workers and the Nazims of union council 2 and 3.

The Awam Dost Nazims announced their support if the mill workers launched a protest campaign.

It was decided in the meeting that the protest campaign would be launched against the mill management from Wednesday. It would include a shutter-down strike.
