KARACHI, Sept 21: Leaders of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal on Sunday refused to accept a ‘president in uniform’ and deplored General Pervez Musharraf’s threat to dissolve the assemblies.
In a statement, MMA’s MNAs Muhammad Hussain Mehnati, Abdul Sattar Afghani and Laeeq Khan claimed that 140 million people of Pakistan were ready to come out on the streets in support of the MMA.
They declared that Gen Musharraf had imposed the worst kind of dictatorship through a manipulated and heavily rigged referendum and had insulted the nation by violating the constitution.
They said that Gen Musharraf had become stubborn on the LFO issue because of the moderate attitude of the opposition and was now refusing to accept the proposal by Mr S.M.Zafar.
They warned the president of serious consequences of his increasingly rigid and uncompromising attitude saying such attitudes in the past had caused fragmentation of the country.
Meanwhile, chief of the Jamat-i-Islami Karachi, Mairajul Huda Siddiqui, alleged that at the behest of military rulers some westernised ladies were demanding repeal of the Hudood laws. He said those opposing the laws were ignorant of Pakistan ideology.
