KARACHI, Sept 20: Police on Saturday detained four suspects in connection with the explosion that damaged the 10th floor of a highrise building on Sharea Faisal on Friday.

Police sources said that the detainees — a contractor, his two colleagues and a security guard — had been associated with the investigation and lodged at different police stations.

The contractor, Mohammad Ismail, had been awarded the contract of electrical wiring in the Kawish Crown Plaza’s management office on its 10th floor, where the blast occurred.

Ismail’s family said that on Saturday, he received a call at about 4am and was asked to reach the plaza along with his colleagues. Accordingly, Ismail, along with Pervez and Ayaz, went there. However, they were detained by police and taken to Tipu Sultan police station, the family stated. Later, the detainees were shifted to Jamshed Quarters and then to Ferozabad police station.

The family alleged that the detainees were not at the Ferozabad police station now and that they (family members) were concerned about their wellbeing.

The detained security guard, Gulfaraz, who was on duty at the time of the blast, is also being interrogated and not being allowed to go home, according to the sources.

It was the second time when the Kawish Crown Plaza was rocked by a blast on Friday. In the earlier incident, on July 11, a bomb blast ripped through the main entrance of the building early morning. Two persons, one of them a security guard, were killed in the explosion. The other man remained unidentified.

Sindh police chief has maintained that the incident seems to be the outcome of some dispute between the building’s management and its rivals.
