RAWALPINDI: Legendary poet Ahmed Faraz was remembered on his 84th birth anniversary at the Rawalpindi Arts Council (RAC) and speakers paid rich tributes to his contributions to Urdu literature.

The event was organised by RAC in collaboration with literary organisations Zaweya and Ahmed Faraz Trust. Renowned poet Professor Ehsan Akbar shared memories of his time with Ahmed Faraz and said that as a student of Urdu literature, he is an admirer of his poetry.

Mehboob Zafar, chief guest at the event, said the poetry of Faraz will keep his memory alive forever while Hameed Shahid said Faraz was a craftsman whose material was words.

Jamil Yousaf, also speaking on the occasion, discussed the unique place the theme of love occupies in the poetry of Faraz.

“Ahmed Faraz’s work attracts the youth because he was once the poet of the younger generation. The struggle for democracy features prominently in his work,” said RAC Resident Director Waqar Ahmed.

Participants participated in the cake cutting ceremony celebrating the late poet’s 84th birth anniversary which was followed by an Urdu poetry recital in which a number of local poets recited their works.
