Salman Taseer’s commemoration attacked in Lahore

LAHORE: Unidentified miscreants attacked a candlelight vigil organised to mark death anniversary of former Punjab governor Salman Taseer who was murdered by his own security guard Mumtaz Qadri for demanding reforms in Pakistan’s blasphemy laws in 2011.
The attack was carried out when members of civil society gathered at Liberty Chowk to light candles in the slain politician’s memory.
Qadri, who was Taseer's bodyguard, shot him dead on January 4, 2011 at Kohsar Market in Islamabad over the politician's call for blasphemy laws to be reformed.
An anti-terrorism court had awarded death penalty to Mumtaz Qadri in October the same year.
Qadri was feted as a hero by a wide section of the public, including lawyers, and was even showered with rose petals as he arrived at court for a trial hearing.

The baton wielding miscreants tore apart banners and posters as they attacked members of civil society. Several people were injured in the sudden attack. The attackers, however, managed to flee before police arrived at the scene.
Civil society activists said that candlelight vigils have been organised in Taseer’s memory for the last four years, but this was the first time it was attacked.
Ordering a probe into the incident, DCO Captain (retd) Mohammad Usman has ordered swift arrest of the culprits behind the attack.
Other police officials told the media later that the eye witness accounts have been recorded and vowed that the culprits would soon be brought to justice.
Reaction on social media
Condemnation poured in soon after the incident was reported on local media with politician and members of civil society demanding arrest of the culprits.

I'm no fan of th late Governor but the Taseer family has suffered enough injury and insult. People should just leave them alone now.

Salman Taseer was a true hero of Islam. I can think of no other Muslim leader in the sub-continent who knowingly put his life at risk to defend a poor soul not of his religion and unrelated by kinship or caste.

On top of that the assassin was projected as a hero in the name of Islam while Qadri's act was against the very spirit of this religion. And now they have raided the ceremony held to remember Salman Taseer. what a shame the Qadri and now these raiders have brought to Islam ironically in the name of this beautiful religion. Fatiha is Islamic ritual and there are plenty of minorty victim who consisted Taseer their hero. BTW, what other Western norm you want to give up? The incident reveals a inhumanity that is visibly on the rise as opposed to the expected humanity to be seen in tolerance, acceptance and forgiveness. Looking at the first comment here by Mr. Danish, it is apparent that the religious tones in our society have blinded us as just plain human beings.
We can't see anything for it's obvious message, but rather assuming that everything has to be "Islamic". What has happened to common sense.
Do we all have to meet certain Islamic standards to be called Pakistani and vice versa?
Candle light or fatiha. That would be the topic after the attack?

One action leads to another. The inability of the government to take action against the Lal Masjid cleric is being taken as its weakness in the resolve to fight terror. This breaths fresh air in to the miscreants who take it for granted that they can do away with any thing.

This time the police were late because they had information about the attack in advance.
How do I know?? It's very simple. Each and everytime any candlelight vigils or similar events organized, police knew about the event in advance and then the police arrange the basic security for that event. This security was absent (please correct me if I am wrong). Why it was absent? .... think and you will get the answer.

In reality the Salman Taseer incident is not a fight between the religious and non-religious as the fundamentalists claim. It is actually a fight between the educated and the uneducated. Educated not in the Harvard University sense but peace loving, fitna dissenting sense. A majority of Pakistani's do not believe in blasphemy laws. As usual it is those in power who take monetary advantage of this non sensical law that are for it and would go to great lengths to keep it. We need to challenge these worshipers of evil and complete what Salman Taseer started. He is the true martyr of Allah for challenging a horrible twisting of Allah's true meaning of Islam.

So many people have already been executed who had been alleged to attempt assassination on Gen. Musharraf. Thanks to God that he had escaped the assassination attack. Qadri had so brutally shot dead Governor Taseer and repeatedly confessed in the Court and in front of Press. But he is not executed till now in spite of death sentence awarded by the Court. This show the standard of justice in Pakistan.
