Indian navy ship sinks off east coast, one killed

NEW DELHI: A Indian torpedo recovery vessel sank off the coastal city of Visakhapatnam killing at least one person, the navy said on Friday, in the latest accident to raise concerns about the Asian power's ageing fleet.
Four other crew members are missing from the 28 personnel on board when the ship sank late on Thursday, a navy spokesman said.
“The remaining 23 personnel were rescued by the search and rescue ships,” the spokesman said.
The vessel was on an exercise to recover practice torpedoes fired by fleet ships, when flooding occurred in one of the compartments, the navy said in a statement.
The Indian navy has experienced a spate of accidents at a time when it is trying to modernise and expand its reach to keep up with the rising maritime ambitions of neighbour China.
The torpedo recovery vessel, a TRVA-72, was built by the Shipyard Limited in 1983, according to media reports.
Most of the country's fleet of more than a dozen submarines is in urgent need of modernisation.
The new government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to upgrade India's military equipment, much of which dates back to the Soviet era, as well as boosting domestic defence manufacturing.

Loss of life of sailors is sad but the vessel was anyway very old, and it wasn't a Warship or frigate. it was a torpedo recovery vessel, so that doesn't affect firepower of navy. Between, I don't think Pakistan has a reason celebrate this because Pakistan, it is China that we are looking at.

The sinking of TRVA-72, is is serious matter of concern,which has to be taken by GOI asap.But it should not be construed that there is a lack of trained & professional people here.These are accidents and can happen anywhere & none of the country is immune to it.Even American space shuttles have crashed due to technical errors in the past.
An inquiry should be held on this and flaws should be dealt with.Everyone should keep in mind that technological progress could not be made unless the error of failure comes.And nothing in this world is infallible.

War mongering India wants to have big navy fleet.So its not easy to maintain them as its cost money. I feel sorry for them if they can't replace just exhausted batteries of a submarine that finally exploded sank leaving scores of sailors and officers dead.

India annual military expenditure is $47 billion whereas Pakistan only spends $7 billion...imagine what combined $54 billion dollar could do to eradicate poverty in India and Pakistan...both countries are facing acute poverty crisis...specially in case of India which usually buys second hand military junk...half of the Indian purchase money i.e. $23.5 billion ends up in the pockets of its politicians, generals and bureaucrats...and the remaining amount i.e. $23.5 billion should be treated as "expense" rather than an "expenditure" because they start falling apart just in few years...

@javed If Pakistan doesn't have good quality educational Institutions including secondary, higher schools, colleges and universities you won't be able to see the world class standard set by Dawn. In all forums. Many thousand Pakistanis works in Dawn group of publications.
Pakistan has some of the best school system in the world, in private sector. Just do some research on beacon house school and city school system. Also HEC(higher education commission) of Pakistan in the last many years and specially during Musharraf years did excellent work regarding scholarships to about 5000 students per year for Phd's and lot of other work.
