KARACHI: A senior activist of the outlawed Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) was shot dead in a suspected sectarian attack in Orangi Town here on Saturday.

Police said Maulana Ismail Khan Muavia was sitting at his shop adjacent to his home in Islamia Colony when two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at him. He received two bullets to his head and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Police were probing the motive for the killing, Pirabad SHO Nasir Mehmood said.

An ASWJ spokesperson said it was an incident of targeted killing. Maulana Ismail was general secretary of the party’s Site chapter and a teacher in a private school, he added.

DEATH AT PPP RALLY: A man died, apparently because of heart attack, during the PPP’s rally near the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam on Saturday.

Jhandu Khan, a resident of Umerkot, was brought dead at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, said Dr Seemin Jamali, the head of the emergency department.

The relatives told police that Mr Khan had fallen unconscious after complaining of chest pain.
