NEW DELHI: There are “no plans” for a meeting between Indian and Pakistani prime ministers on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York this week, India’s foreign ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.
As part of “neighbours first” policy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet the leaders of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal, Press Trust of India quoted the spokesman, Mr Syed Akbaruddin, as saying.
Asked if there could be a meeting between Mr Modi and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, he said: “There are no plans for the meeting.”
About recent meetings between Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh, the spokesperson said these were ‘courtesy’ meetings sought by the Pakistani envoy.
“Process should not be mixed with the content,” he said when asked if these meetings were indicative of possibility that the two prime ministers might meet in New York.
On the Modi-Hasina meeting, PTI quoted the spokesman as saying that both countries were aware of each other’s concerns and issues and any meeting will help in better understanding and also further deepening of the bilateral cooperation.

I think a brief meeting would not have hurt either side even though they would have reiterated their well rehearsed stances.

Modi lost the opportunity of resolving issues through dialog when he cancelled the foreign secretary level meetings. I found the reasons given very immature and in statesman like. India and Modi need to grow up and look at reality. If they want true democracy then the people of Kashmir need to be given a referendum on whether they want to be independent, with Pakistan or stay with India.

Pakistan needs to get back on its feet first before we even try to talk because we will not be talking with position of strength. If India even ask for a meeting, we should put it off unless it serves our interest; example Water dispute etc...

Mr Modi and Mr Sharif are good friends. They keep in contact but are vary of Kashmir and the likes of Bilawal who squib about Kashmir and can do nothing.

@Akhtar - Thanks for the proposal. The status-quo works very well for us. If Pakistan sees benefit in having cordial relationships with India then it should initiate the meetings. These meetings will be as per India's requirements and not that of Pakistan. If this is not acceptable then 'no-meetings', 'no-relationship' is what we will have and will not ever break it.

Why NS is in NY to begin with , top that in a most expensive hotel sharing with Obama? He has lost all moral support to govern Pakistan among the masses. People have given their verdict against his corruption, nepotism and election rigging. At this point of time , the most important matter to the people of Pakistan is better governance by true patriotic and relentlessly committed leaders.. Meeting with Modi is right down in the pile of the important things.

@Akhtar - More than India, it is Pakistan who has harmed the Kashmiris. Today Pakistan's international credibility is so low that whoever it supports (Kashmiris in this case) will be looked upon in suspicion. If Pakistan truly wants good for Kashmir, it should improve its perception in the world.

@Akhtar : Kashmir belong to India by way of Historical facts as well a Legal facts. This applies regardless of whether the so alled Kashmiris who live today in the valley want it or not. In any case referendums do not apply in places where demographics have undergone changes beause of genocid. Ta!

@Akhtar We need to first define who is the voice of people of Kashmir. If the current Pakistani High Commissioner thinks only those separatists represent the Kashmiris then he is decidedly and openly taking an anti-India stance. Imagine an Indian official publicly meeting Baloch separatists in Islamabad, how will Pakistani administration and people react to that?

The only one point agenda of N. Sharif would have been kashmir.. Pakistan does not want to talk over development mutual cooperation. They have only one agenda, i.e. Kashmir... So its better to not meet... Thanks Modi for this bold step..

Its 67 years now and we kashmiris dont want to belong to pakistan .... happy with what we are today .... leave us alone PLEASE .... try to set up your house first ..... and by the way what are your plans if India gives you rest of Kashmir .... ??? ..... will you not hand it over to China as you did with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir ....
