SHEIKHUPURA, Aug 30: Foul odour emitting from a local poultry market has become a constant threat to the health of residents and shopkeepers in the vicinity.
Located in the Jinnah Park near a busy commercial centre, the poultry remnants and miasma have been spreading many diseases among the locals. Passers-by also face a great deal of inconvenience here.
According to Dr Abdul Qayyum, people exposed to foul breath for long can develop a wide range of diseases, especially those related to chest and eyes.
The Citizen Welfare Society claims to have been consistently reminding the tehsil municipal administration higher-ups to shift the poultry market to some other place. However, all its pleas have gone unheeded.
Meanwhile, a traders’ association recently held a meeting and passed a resolution against the TMA’s apathy. They asked the municipal authorities to shift the poultry market from the Jinnah Park (Civil Quarter Road) to a suitable place without further delay.
Jinnah Park traders’ association president Ahmad Naseem has threatened that the traders would take strong action, if the TMA did not shift the poultry market outside the city.
The TMA officials, when contacted by this correspondent, said the poultry marketers had been regularly paying taxes and could not be easily disturbed.
