SUKKUR, Aug 30: A meeting of the Jeay Sindh Mahaz was held here on Thursday in which the speakers regretted the statement of President Pervez Musharraf regarding the construction of the Kalabagh dam and Thal canal, and said it was against the sentiments of the people of Sindh.

They said that despite the resolution adopted unanimously by the Sindh assembly against the projects, the statement of Gen Musharraf during his recent visit in which he said the projects were essential, was not only contempt of an elected provincial assembly but also against the sentiments of the people of Sindh.

According to a press release, they said the Kalabagh Dam project had already been rejected by three provincial assemblies but the president was again bringing up the issue to pave way for the construction of the Thal canal and to set aside the issues of the Legal Framework Order and his uniform.

They said that protest against the construction of the dam and the canal would continue.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Thal Canal Committee took out a procession in Jacobabad on Thursday night to protest against the Kalabagh and Thal projects.

Led by the Sindh Tarraqi Pasand Party leader, Ali Mohammad, PPP leader, Abdul Sattar, JUI leader, Dr Abdul Ghani, and other local leaders, the protesters marched through the main thoroughfares of the city, raising slogans against the Kalabagh and Thal projects.

The protesters assembled at the DCO Chowk, where the speakers deplored the announcement of President Musharraf regarding the projects which had led to conflicts between Punjab and other provinces.
