GUJRANWALA: Women’s cricket team all-rounder Nida Dar was allegedly beaten up and injured by her former brother-in-law over a family dispute on Saturday following which she got a first information report registered against him.

Nida told police her sister had got divorce from Junaid Dar who was threatening her and her family with dire consequences and demanding extortion. She said she had asked him not to come to their house ever, which enraged him.

On Saturday, he went over to their house along with his accomplices and assaulted Nida and threatened her with dire consequences. He later fled from the scene when she raised an alarm.

Nida told the media she went to the police station for action against Junaid, but police did not pay heed and instead harassed her. She then narrated the entire incident to the media after which an FIR was registered against the suspects.

She demanded police arrest Junaid and his accomplices as he was still issuing death threats to her and her family. Jinnah Road police said raiding teams had been constituted to arrest the suspect.

COMPENSATION: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday accorded approval to compensation for the family of the three children who were electrocuted in Khiali two days ago.

Commissioner Shamail Ahmad Khwaja along with Gepco Chief Executive Muneer Ahmad and other senior officers went to the residence of the deceased children in Shadman Town and presented a cheque for Rs1.5 million to their father, Zaheer, on behalf of the chief minister. They also offered condolences over the deaths.

The Gepco chief executive said Water and Power Secretary Nargis Sethi also offered condolences to the bereaved family.

He claimed all electricity poles in the six districts of the division had been checked to avoid such incidents in future.

He ordered to provide electricity connection immediately at the residence of the deceased children.

CRACKDOWN: A meeting of the administration and police decided to launch a crackdown on shopkeepers and kite flyers on Saturday.

All DCOs and DPOs of the division were directed to ensure safety of citizens’ lives.

The meeting was presided over by Commissioner Shamail Ahmad Khwaja while DCO Azmat Mahmood, CPO Waqas Nazir, Additional Commissioner Khalid Nazir and Assistant DIG Iftikhar Ahmad attended it.
