KARACHI: The European Union (EU) has stopped Pakistan International Airlines from bringing cargo to the member states owing to security concerns, it is learnt here reliably.
According to the highly placed sources, the ban will also leave the national flag carrier unable to carry the cargo for the United States.
Though there is no restriction on PIA from the US authorities, the airline is not allowed to fly directly from Pakistan to the US and all Pakistan International Airlines flights going to the US have to land at European airports first for checking before restarting their journey for the US.
Saudi Arabia warns PIA of halting flights over unpaid dues
Responding to Dawn queries, PIA spokesperson Mashhood Tajwar said the ban was imposed owing to security concerns by the United Kingdom only, but as the UK is a member of the European Union all the EU countries would observe this ban and would not allow the PIA aircraft to carry cargo there.
He said a communication had been received to this effect from the UK’s Transpiration Department on Monday.

@operate Yes, it is insulting and painful. But let us try to look at the problem realistically rather than emotionally. It is in Pakistan only that rules and laws are regularly ignored and institutions are slowly crumbling. We can probably ignore the situation domestically but other countries have no reason to compromise on regulations and standards. Just like it is risky to visit or live in Pakistan, it is risky to conduct business with Pakistan too. Time to correct institutions, end corruption, put religion on the backseat, curb terrorism, and work hard to regain our place internationally.

They would not be able to bear the xtra cost, even for a day, for them to divert all their flights that pass through Pakistani airspace on their way to Far East.

It is not only PIA that carries cargo from Pakistan airports to EU and UK. Many other carriers do this as well. Unless there is a specific reason, as yet unknown, all of these will have to also be banned. Seems a short term that could be resolved in a few days. Surprised at the over reaction.

Did you just come out of your cave? Most foreign airlines do not fly to Pakistan any longer. PIA has long been the subject of discussions amongst security-conscious officials and experts in many parts of the world. Besides being a security risk, in terms of terrorism, most PIA planes are considered to be technically flawed and the skills of its crew members do not meet international standards of service.

Sad to see state of internal strife in Pak. Its high time Pak clean up the house. But will it ever happen especially when the Govt and Military don't get along and all shots are still undertaken by military. India never believed in 2-nation theory while Pak does. Look what's happening military is being used to fight internal when supposed to be used near borders. Killing own people. Wonder if cleaning up internal troubles will ever happen..since if it does Pak worries that funds to fight terror will stop. So back to square one. Its really sad to see this part of the region always in this mode instead of focusing energies on education, trade, development in this century. Gen Zia definitely took the country backwards, in his interview he said he had to embark on Islamisation simply because he had to differentiate against India which otherwise Pak was same as India.

They claimed that Pakistan is a sovereign state where people live with dignity and pride, making decisions without any foreign intervention and influence.All this was said at a function hosting Saudi prince who is 117th in order of seniority for acceptance of 1.5 billion "friendly cheque".

PIA should not buy Airbus planes and start manufacturing it's own planes. Enough is enough....Pakistan needs to economically squeeze EU. @Shahid hassan People of Pakistan too are responsible for shaming themselves in the eyes of the world by being religious fanatics. Just having pretty faced singers, 2 -3 fashions shows don't change the perceptions the world has of Pakistan as a whole. Change ourselves to change how the world sees Pakistan. But I guess that's a very hard task.

This article is misleading and just sensationalism. PIA is the victim of the ban because of the recent terrorism at Jinnah International Airport. If our security procedures our enhanced and improved by the government, then this will go away. It could have happened to any other Pakistani carrier operating to the UK or Europe from Pakistan.

PIA deserves it. EU, US & Middle East is not like home that you do what ever you like. It is corruption from national leaders to a counter clerk,all are involved in loot and plunder in addition to actual theft by PIA employees. I once walked last year in PIA's main ticketing office in Karachi purchsed tkt for Lahore. 50 % of emloyees were off their desks, only one handicapped lady was on duty. She made tkt for me but when I paid cash , I was not given a cash reciept. I only got a paper ( e-tkt ) and was made to disappear from that sales office. I had to catch a flight that evening and I left qietly.
It is my my earnest wish that every country stops PIA flights over their territories. Amen !

@event horizon Agreed, 100%. Time has come something must be done now. There are examples of Philippine Airlines and Indian airlines. It is time PIA must be wiped out and become part of history. Other organisations like steel mill will learn a lesson.
