KARACHI, July 17: The KESC has undertaken ‘mega repair works’ to mend more than 700 broken lines in the city, according to a spokesman who said that the damage was caused on Wednesday by gusty winds, which uprooted trees and pulled down hoardings across the metropolis, and the heavy downpour.

He said that since 7am Thursday, the corporation had been handling the situation with an additional workforce of 3,000 men, including about 270 engineers, equipped with 300 repair vans for a rapid reconnection task to be accomplished before sunset.

However, he added, nearly 600 snapped wires were fixed and power supply to the concerned areas was restored. Work on the remaining lines will continue ‘non-stop’ till a normal supply in the entire city is restored.

The spokesman said that during the last 24 hours, more than 200 tripping of various feeders were corrected, seven burnt out pole-mounted transformers replaced and 29 main cable faults repaired.

The damage-control and repair operation was carried out on war-footings as it was the only way to keep the aged power supply system alive, he maintained.

The spokesman said that the distribution department, chief engineers and area engineers were on high alert.

The entire senior management will continue to monitor the repair activity from the central control room of Power House till all breakdowns are repaired and in case of further rains, mobilize the power restoration operations.

Some of the areas where the work for the restoration of power supply is still continuing are: Journalists Society (block 4-A) and block 7 in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, blocks L, Q and R of North Nazimabad and block 6 of F. B. Area.—APP
