HARIPUR, Oct 11: The Nazim of Haripur tehsil council, Iftikhar Ashraf Khan, presented a Rs52.6 million budget for the fiscal year 2001-02 under the new district government system here on Thursday.

Addressing the 53-member council, the Nazim said the tehsil administration was expected to receive Rs45.44 million as income as against Rs33.8 million in 2000. The total income shown as Rs52.5 million included Rs7.2 million as an opening balance.

Of the total income, a sum of Rs31.03 million was earmarked as non-development expenditure, while Rs20.2 million went to development expenditure.  

Providing the details of non-development expenditure, the Nazim informed the council that Rs10.41 million were allocated for establishment, Rs10.14 million for contingencies and Rs3.11 million for others.

Only one per cent of the total budget amounting to Rs 0.096 million was allocated for civil defence, Rs0.3 million for Naib Nazim secretariat, Rs0.1 million for educational scholarships, Rs0.39 million for women projects and Rs0.45 million for sports, Rs0.25 million for social welfare, Rs0.3 million for community development and Rs3.8 million for health sector shown as expenditure of the administration.

About the income, the tehsil Nazim informed the council that Rs15 million would be released to the tehsil administration in line with the share of octroi tax from the government.

Though the Nazim categorically stated that he was presenting a tax-free budget, the budget document showed an increase of Rs0.11 million in the rates of Tehbazari in the city, as compared to only Rs10,000 in the last budget.

Likewise, the expected income shown in the budget also indicated that the new administration was set to enhance the rates of tax on the transfer of immovable property, which was shown as Rs3.5 million compared to Rs2.5 million last year.

The income from the rent of government property in the city was estimated at Rs4.6 million.
