PESHAWAR, June 30: A leading cellular company, Mobilink, has paid compensation to its customers in line with the penalty imposed on the company for its poor quality of service.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had imposed a fine of Rs60 million on the company on June 6, directing to pay the penalty by compensating its over one million customers in the country within 30 days of the order.
According to an estimate, each customer of the company was likely to get Rs60 in compensation.
Some Mobilink customers told Dawn on Monday that the company had added the penalty amount to their balance. In Peshawar, a pre-paid connection holder received Rs50 in his balance while another got Rs150.
A customer, when asked to check his account, said his account had zero balance and that no outgoing call could be made from his mobile set. However, when he did so on this reporter’s insistence, he beamed with joy, saying that Rs50 had been added to his balance. Likewise, another customer also claimed that the company had added Rs150 to his pre-paid account balance.
A Mobilink official said the company had paid the compensation amount to its customers in accordance with the PTA decision.
He said the company had also initiated work on installing new towers to improve the network as it could not afford any further penalties or receive any more complaints from its customers.
