KARACHI, June 29: The thoroughbred bay horse The Club Champion made it two winners in a row for owner M. Ateeq, collaring front runner Bold Commander 100 yards from the winning post, after the two were engaged in a keen tussle for supremacy when heads turned for home at the Summer Gymkhana Meeting held on Sunday at the Karachi Racecourse.
Participating in the concluding event with only seven runners vying for the spoils, Bold Commander took a flying start followed by Fire Of Desire, Donatello and The Club Champion.
Nearing the bend, The Club Champion moved in smoothly into the second spot and when heads turned for home, The Club Champion and Bold Commander were running neck and neck for the winning post.
Ghulam Shabbir II, then urged on his mount and rallying splendidly to his call, The Club Champion moved ahead passing the winning post in style in a fine time of one minute 3 3/5 seconds.
In another interesting contest, Canon Again partnered by M. Mazhar, won the fourth race of the afternoon by just half a length from Deniro with M. Yousuf in the saddle, after the two matched strides with each other while sprinting for home.
In the opening event on the programme, the raging favourite Grey Boy piloted by M. Mazhar was in for a rude shock, soundly beaten by Royal Beauty after leading the field for most part of the race.
Irfan Mehdi’s chestnut horse Sovero at last registered a victory over here, sprinting over the five furlongs in a smart time of one minute 4 3/5 seconds with promising rider M. Nasir in the saddle.
Finishing in the far distance was Lucky Lover second, followed home by Mark and Trust Me.
Sweet Grandy partnered by Aashiq Ali, beat a big field of 18 runners in the following event winning the five furlong sprint by a handsome margin of 4 1/2 lengths from Power Plus with Maha Saghar grabbing the third berth from Ustadon Ka Ustad.
Thirteen runners, all maidens at the time of starting, were vying for the spoils in the fifth race. The contest was won the bay colt Shab Alam ridden by Azmat, beating stable companion Raaz by two and a half lengths.
Ray Of Light provided an upset in the following event, sprinting home to victory with jockey M. Rehman astride, passing the winning post ahead of more fancied runners after Prince Of Arabia, went a trifle wide at the bend. Sardar came third and Blue’s Night completed the frame.
The next race meeting is scheduled for Sunday, July 6.
