KARACHI: Three men, including a teacher at the Iranian cultural centre, were shot dead in suspected sectarian attacks in the city on Monday, police said.

The teacher, who had been wounded by armed robbers last month, was killed in the fresh attack soon after he was discharged from hospital, the police said.

SSP Syed Pir Mohammed Shah said that Mohammed Hussain, 45, was wounded in Clifton on Jan 28. He was under treatment at a Soldier Bazaar hospital from where he was released on Monday. As soon as he along with his attendant, Asad Ali, 25, stepped out, armed motorcyclists opened fire on them and fled, the SSP said. Both of them suffered wounds and were taken to a private hospital on Stadium Road, where doctors declared Mr Hussain dead.

A spokesperson for the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen condemned the attack and said the victim was Shia and taught Persian at the Iranian cultural centre (Khana-i-Farhang) in the city.

ASP-Clifton Ibadat Nisar said the police believed the previous attack was related to a mugging attempt.

In Rizvia Society, a motorbike mechanic was shot dead in the evening.

Rizvia SHO Hasan Haider said that Syed Shahzad Ali Zaidi, 26, was killed at his shop in Waheedabad in a drive-by shooting. SSP-West Irfan Baloch said that it appeared to be a case of sectarian killing.

Earlier, Syed Sarwar Abbas, 28, was targeted outside a meat shop near his residence in Madina Colony in Orangi Town’s Sector 11 ½.

The area police said the victim sustained a bullet wound in the head. They said he was Shia and worked at a garments factory. The murder might be an outcome of sectarianism, said Mominabad SHO Ahmed Butt.
