MINGORA: For the first time in the history of Swat a woman, Tabassum Adnan, attended a jirga held in Madyan area of the district.

Ms Adnan, the chairperson of Khwendo Jirga, told Dawn that her organisation thwarted an attempt of giving a girl in swara in the area. Later, the local elders called a jirga on January 5 for reconciliation between both the parties, she added.

“I was invited to the jirga. It was for the first time that a woman participated in a men’s jirga,” Ms Adnan said. She added that giving a girl in swara was un-Islamic and unlawful custom. Ms Adnan said that her organisation would continue its

struggle against social evils and injustices. She said that all segments of society should join hands against illegal customary practice of swara. — Correspondent
