VEHARI, June 15: Four people lost their lives and some 17 others fainted in different parts of the district as mercury shot up to 48.5 degree Celsius on Sunday.
Abdul Rashid of Chak 13/WB, Foji Abdul Sattar of Chak 33/WB, Amir Ali of Tibba Sultanpur and Shah Muhammad of Gago Mandi died of heatstroke while working in the open as labourers. About 17 people, including women and children, fell unconscious due to sizzling heat in various parts of the district. They were identified as Tahir, Azher, Rafia, Ali Akbar, Nadia Iqbal, Janat Bibi, Sabia Bibi, Kiran, Allah Bukhsh, Mehr Din, Ruqqaya Bibi, Allah Ditta, Mehr Iqbal, Muhammad Ilyas, Muhammad Saeed, Habib Ahmed and Rajab Ali.
The busy markets in the district wore deserted look due to extreme weather conditions. For the last one week, about two dozen people were admitted to the local DHQ Hospital.
SLAUGHTERED: A youth was axed to death on Sunday allegedly by his two uncles over a land dispute at Chak 11/WB.
Afzal and Asgher developed some differences with his nephew Saeed Akhter. They attacked him with the axe when Akhter was sitting at a nearby field. He died on the spot.
Police have arrested the accused and are investigating.
