KARACHI, June 12: The Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) on Thursday made six mobile transformers units of 250-500 KVA capacity for quick restoration of power supply in the areas where a PMT or sub-station transformers develops fault and needs replacement, according to a KESC spokesman.
He said that the KESC management, realising the difficulty caused to the consumers during power breakdowns due to faulty transformers, directed the KESC transformers and switcher-gear rebuild workshop to immediately assemble mobile transformers which could be utilised at the place of fault, so that power supply remained on during the period the PMT was being replaced. It took 8-12 hours to replace a PMT, the spokesman added.
He said that KESC had made the mobile units very cost-effective.
“The market cost of such unit is Rs2 million, while the KESC cost is Rs335,120,” he said and added the KESC had also developed capabilities for manufacturing new 250-500 KVA transformers at its workshop at West Wharf.
As soon as the KESC workshop is given the permission to manufacture transformers, it will start making 250-500 KVA transformers in-house, helping the power utility add cost-effective new PMTs to the city distribution network facilitating better power supply to the consumers.
KESC engineers and workers have also assembled on oil-cleaning plant to recycle the white oil used in transformers. The recycling plant was inaugurated on Thursday. About 35,000 litres of oil per month are utilised at the workshop. — PPI
