GILGIT, June 7: Environmental activists on Wednesday said that inadequate solid waste disposal system in Gilgit and adjoining areas posed major health and ecological hazards.

Speaking at a two-day-long workshop on “Journalism for Sustainable development and environment” that concluded here on Wednesday Nadeem Iqbal said that the primary purpose of the workshop was to train local journalists, enabling to effectively project environmental development issues, adding that the mainstream media had yet to explore the issues.

At least 20 newsmen attended the two-day workshop, jointly organized by the Leadership in Environment and Development, International Union for Conservation of Nature, World Wildlife Fund, and the Mountain Areas Conservation Project.

The workshop had been arranged to broaden the local journalists’ understanding of the development and environmental issues and sensitise them about the hazards of solid waste management.

Nadeem Iqbal and Hamad Naqi provided training to journalists on issues related with effective reporting, identification of problems and news analyses.
