ISLAMABAD, Oct 10: The capital police are trying to implicate an alleged terrorist, Hammad Adil, in a terrorism case which is not even registered with the police.

A report submitted to the interior ministry by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG operation) Sultan Azam Temuri alleged that Hammad Adil had assaulted General Zaheer ul Islam of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) on November 22, 2011.

However, the incident is not available in the police record.

The police record only mentions that on November 22, 2011, the police recovered a suicide jacket and a watch from the greenbelt of Shakarparian.

Consequently, a case under Explosive Act Section 4 was registered against unidentified people.

At that time, General Zaheer was serving as Lieutenant General and was stationed in Karachi.

The police now claim that Hammad Adil, during interrogation, had confessed to the suicide attack on Gen Zaheer.

However, a police officer told Dawn that the police were not aware of any attack on the former Inter Services Intelligence head.

Instead, he said Adil was only wanted by the city circle police in connection with the suicide attacks at the Danish Embassy and the Luna Caprese Restaurant in 2008.

Regarding the incident in 2011, the official said a driver in the Capital Development Authority (CDA) had spotted a suicide jacket and had informed the police about it.

He also helped the authorities sketch the suicide bomber’s features.

According to the driver, the would-be suicide attacker had abandoned the suicide jacket after spotting him (the driver) in the area.

A few months later, the driver once again approached the police. He said he saw the photo of a man in Bhara Kahu police station which resembled the suicide attacker.

The police then identified the attacker as Kashif, a resident of Shakrial.

However no arrest has been made and Kashif is still wanted by the Aabpara police in connection with the suicide jacket case.

Meanwhile, an interrogation report submitted by a joint investigation team (JIT) stated that during interrogation, Adil told the police that a man named Tanveer had informed him (Adil) of the attack on Gen Zaheer.

Tanveer told Adil that he, along a suicide bomber from Wana and Ghulam Ullah, had attacked Gen Zaheer ul Islam on November 22, 2011.

However, he said the suicide jacket did not explode due to a technical fault, and they were forced to flee from the scene to avoid arrest.

Tanveer further told Adil that the suicide bomber had gone back to Wana after the attempt on General Zaheer’s life failed.

However, even though Hammad Adil only stated that he was told about the incident by Tanveer, the police are now trying to implicate Adil in the said case.

The official said Adil would be taken into remand in connection with the two suicide attacks.

If he also confesses to his involvement in the assault on the ISI head, the police would request the spy agency to register a complaint and take action.

On the other hand, he would be buried from the assault case if no complaint is registered, he added.

Despite repeated attempts, the official version from the police could not be obtained.
