KARACHI, Sept 2: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Monday came up with a fresh requisition to call the Sindh Assembly session days after Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani turned down the opposition party’s request citing it had failed to meet the set rules.

Led by the senior leaders, MQM members of the provincial assembly met the acting speaker Shehla Raza to file the ‘verified-requisition’, showing ‘seriousness’ to discuss Karachi’s law and order situation on the floor of the house.

The party leaders said all the lawmakers belonging to the MQM were called for the fresh requisition in order to remove any doubt about the verification of any formality.

Last week Speaker Durrani had turned down the MQM requisition to call the house session, citing that a few of the total 43 signatures did not match with the record of the Sindh Assembly. He had asked the MQM to file the fresh requisition as the previous could not be entertained.

“It reflects our seriousness and we have made sure that no margin of error occurs this time,” senior legislator and MQM leader in the Sindh Assembly Syed Sardar Ahmed told reporters after filing the fresh requisition. He added that the party wanted that the house be called at the earliest so that some very serious issues could be discussed.

MQM’s deputy parliamentary in the Sindh Assembly Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hasan said being a major political stakeholder, the party leaders and workers were worried about the deteriorating law and order condition in the city. He said the assembly was the only option in the democratic system where the elected representatives could share their concerns and discuss the issue.

He said it’s time that the session was called and options were discussed to solve Karachi crises. “The government must show its seriousness and take people into confidence. Being representatives of the Karachi people, we take it as our responsibility to ask the government about their plans,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Sagheer Ahmed confirmed MQM’s parliamentary leader in the National Assembly Dr Farooq Sattar’s participation in the upcoming ‘special federal cabinet meeting’ to be chaired by Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif in Karachi to discuss the city situation.

“Dr Sattar would brief the PM and cabinet members about the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi. The authorities must have been aware about the pain that Karachiites undergo everyday and we hope that the federal government would meet people’s expectations,” he said.

Later, deputy speaker Shehla Raza said the MQM’s requisition had been forwarded for further process and decision to call the house session would be made soon.
