SUKKUR May 20: More than 150 feet wide breach occurred in Qazi Wah near Mirpur Mathelo on Monday night as a result two villages and cotton crop over 2,000 acres of land were inundated and vegetable crop was damaged.
The villagers of Badal Jiskani told this correspondent on telephone that they immediately informed the area irrigation officials about the canal breach but they failed to arrive on the spot to plug it.
Later in the afternoon, the breach was plugged by hundreds of villagers after the irrigation staff stopped water supply to the canal from the main feeder.
The villagers said that earlier, they had repeatedly told the irrigation officials that the embankment of the canal was weak and needed repair but they paid no heed to their complaints.
ARRESTED: At least 20 train robbers involved in looting the Seven-up Tezgam near the Mando Dero Railway Station were arrested by the Sukkur police, said the DPO, Sukkur, Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh, while briefing newsmen on Tuesday.
