PESHAWAR, May 20: NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has criticized the anti-democracy forces for trying to destabilize the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government.

Speaking at the inauguration of a detoxification centre at the Blinds’ Institute here on Tuesday, he warned troublemongers to desist from fanning uncertainty.

He said MMA was the single largest parliamentary party in the province, yet he was running the government with the cooperation of opposition parties.

The chief minister urged tribal elders to cooperate with the government in its campaign against narcotics trade and persuade growers to stop growing poppy.

He told the police to intensify their efforts against the spread of narcotics menace in society and assured the police of government’s support in this regard.

Mr Durrani appreciated the initiative taken by the Zakat and Ushr ministry for the rehabilitation of drug addicts.

The chief minister announced a Rs5 million grant for the rehabilitation centre.

Talking to newsmen later, he said the government had banned male instructors for women athletes. “In fact, we do not want to place a ban on women sports,” he pointed out.

Earlier, Zakat, Ushr and Women Development Minister Hafiz Hashmat said a 30-bed rehabilitation centre would be established at the Blinds’ Institute, which would be run by the departments of social welfare, health and police.

He said the MMA government would also establish such rehabilitation centres in other parts of the province.

CAMPAIGN: The city police have launched a 15-day campaign against beggary, drug addicts and narcotics traffickers, official sources said.
