KARACHI, May 17: Governor Ishratul Ibad, expressing dissatisfaction over water distribution system in the city, has decided to constitute a committee to be headed by the provincial minister for local government to suggest solutions to the problems in this regard.

He was presiding over a high level meeting at the Governor House here on Saturday. He called for an improvement in the distribution system with the cooperation of elected representatives.

The committee, he said, would take notice of complaints received from elected representatives, people and other sources and suggest solutions to the identified problems.

He directed the committee to submit its report within four weeks.

The governor had especially invited ministers, MNAs and MPAs to the meeting. The chief secretary and city Nazim were also present.

The Managing Director of KWSB, Brig Javed Ashraf, gave a briefing on the issue.

The elected representatives criticized the water supply system and called for an immediate remedy. They pin-pointed problems of water theft and illegal connections besides expressing reservations on tanker supply system.

The governor observed that statistics and technical puzzles could not satisfy people. The real problem, he said, was water was not reaching the people and to solve the problem ways and means would have to be found.

Dr Ibad pointed out that desired results could be achieved only with the cooperation of public representatives as well as dedication and commitment of the concerned authorities.

“We will have to tell the people that if water is available through tankers, then why not through the pipelines.”

He warned that disciplinary action would be ensured if the elected representatives did not get correct response from the authorities and negligence was demonstrated in resolving the problem.

He made it clear that there would be no compromise when it came to be the question of provision of basic facilities to the people.

The provincial ministers Mohammed Hussain, Shoaib Bukhari, Imtiaz Shaikh, Irfan Magsi, Dr Saeeda Malik, Senator Babar Ghouri, Adviser Salahuddin Haider and others also expressed their views during the meeting.—APP
