KARACHI, May 12: The Lawyers for Human Rights and Legal Aid, under its prison project, observed World Mothers’ Day on Monday, arranging various activities for women prisoners of Karachi Women’s Jail and also the children who were confined with them.

On the occasion Dr Saleema Ahmed of the Business and Professional Women’s Association, Artist Qudsia Nisar, Dr Nazli Hussain of the Civil Hospital Karachi, DSP Jalees Fatima, Jail Superintendent Ms Sheeba Shah and Ms Aqsa of the LHRLA spoke to the female prisoners on issues in health and education.

In all 269 women are lodged in the jail along with 61 children. There are 22 girls among the children. Twenty children are infants while other children’s ages range from one to ten years.

About 40 children participated in different activities organized by the LHRLA which included postcard making. The children wrote messages for their mothers on the postcards. The women prisoners also wrote messages for their mothers on a banner arranged by LHRLA. Later, gifts were distributed among them.

Some women prisoners recited satirical poems narrating the jail conditions while members of the Kids Theatre performed for their entertainment. — PPI
