LANDI KOTAL/PESHAWAR, May 26: Two women and as many children were killed and several others injured when heavy rain and hailstorm accompanied with strong winds lashed Khyber Agency, Peshawar and Swat on Sunday.

A newly-married woman and minor boy were killed and two children received injuries, as heavy rains hit most parts of Landi Kotal and Jamrud tehsil of Khyber Agency.

According to details, wife of Khaistullah was killed when she was swept away by floodwater in Pasedkhel village. Water also carried away over 20 goats and cows in the same locality, while some houses were partially damaged.

In Shagai area of Jamrud tehsil, a minor boy was killed and two others were injured when boundary wall of a house, weakened by rain, fell on them.

In Peshawar, a minor girl died after she was struck by lightning in Pakha Ghulam village, according to Paharipura police. She was identified as Salma, daughter of Wadud.

Rain accompanied with hailstones pounded the provincial capital causing damage to horticulture and vehicles on the roads and streets though it turned the otherwise scorching weather pleasant.

Several people suffered slight injuries as stormy winds uprooted trees in different localities of the metropolis. Reports said that the cantonment area and areas adjacent to the University Road, Hayatabad and Khyber Bazaar received heavy hailstorm.

Customers, including women, took shelter in shops to protect themselves when heavy hailstones started raining, causing dents on vehicles. Several pedestrians also suffered hailstone hits and minor injuries.

Army soldiers and policemen briefly abandoned checkpoints in cantonment area because of the storm.

However, the residents braving scorching heat and massive power loadshedding took a sigh of relief and came out of their houses to enjoy the cool weather.

Thick layer of hailstones covered the roads, streets and green belts of the city. Children and youngsters emerged soon after the hailstorm stopped and played with hailstones throwing them at each others.

The Met officials said that maximum temperature was 36 degrees Celsius, which dropped to 25 degrees Celsius after the rain and hailstorm. They also predicted more rain in the night.

The officials said that the Met office recorded 9mm rain in Peshawar. Residential quarters in low-lying areas and roads were inundated by rainwater. Before the hailstorm strong winds hit the city, which uprooted trees and knocked down signboards.

In Mingora, a woman was killed as rain coupled with windstorm hit Swat valley on Sunday.

Mamro Jan, wife of Mushtamil, was killed as a tree fell on her due to strong wind in Moredai village of Peuchar in upper Swat. She was out to graze cattle at a nearby hamlet.

The boundary wall of the house of one Riaz fell due to strong windstorm in Rahimabad, Mingora, while power supply to Swat remained disconnected as a high transmission electric wire dropped on ground.

The main Kalam-Bahrain road was closed due to landslide. As a result, hundreds of vehicles, including those of tourists, remained stuck on road near Satal village in Bahrain.

Meanwhile, gushing water swept away a link road at Kaswat.

Residents said that water flow in Swat River has increased at Kas.

In Charsadda, floodwater swept away a student, while another one was rescued as water flow in Kabul River increased at Hajizai on Sunday.

The floodwater swept away one Musa, son Aurangzeb, while one Khayam was rescued by local people when the water level touched Gari Muhkam Shah. Dozens of residents also vacated their houses and shifted to safer places.
